Jett smiled at the principal. “We were glad to be of assistance. The truth is, I wish we hadn’t threatened him either, but we can’t abide bullies, and we lost our temper.”

Donna’s eyes grew wide. “You certainly didn’t show it. And I’m surprised. I would think bikers would automatically resort to bullying tactics.”

Ronan smiled as Jett winced. “I understand we have that image. We need better public relations people. And I’m sure that a lot of ‘my clan’ would be happy to start with violence, and some clubs far more than others. And in no way are we pacifists; however, if we were all as prone to resorting to hitting people as the movies portray, there wouldn’t be many of us left.”

“I suppose not.”

“The truth is that we’re just people, ma’am,” said Jett, “and you’ll find all kinds of men wearing motorcycle club colors.”

Ronan looked her over. “Now, I won’t insult you by claiming to be a nice guy, or a solid citizen. You seem like a conscientious and efficient principal, and I’m quite sure you’ve read my record.” He gave her a wink, and Tessa was sure Donna blushed. “I’m just saying we don’t put up with bullying. But never fear, I’m sure if you got to know me well, you’d find lots of things to dislike about me and my biker ways.”

“Mine too,” said Jett with a grin and a wink. He was doing that instinctive flirtation again, and it was obviously making Donna flustered.

She blushed and waved a hand in front of her face. “Now you’re making fun of me for making a stupid generalization,” she said, making Tessa laugh. “Very well, point taken. I stand rebuffed.”

“And I’m standing here when I should be fixing a motorcycle. We’ll leave you two to discuss the apparent shortcomings in the approved textbooks and the poor manners of irate parents.”

As he walked away, Donna smiled at Tessa. “There is a lot more to those men than I would’ve expected.”

At that moment, Tessa liked Donna Turnbull a lot more than she’d ever thought possible. “I think there might be a lot more to you than meets the eye as well. That was impressive of you, standing up to that big man, coming between two men like that. Impressive, not to mention brave.”

The woman brought herself erect, smiling. “You think so? I’d like to think I can be brave when the occasion requires it.” Then she shook her head. “There isn’t a thing wrong with the textbooks, Miss Lee.”

“No, I don’t think there is.”

Then she watched the principal head back to her office with her head in the air and a noticeable spring in her step.

Chapter 7

Much to her delight,Ronan dropped Kayla off at the garage and told her to start closing up Tiny’s engine. “Maybe we can get it back to him today. So you get to work. We,” he gestured to Jett, “need to go to the clubhouse.”

When she scampered into the garage, he rode to the clubhouse. “Seen Rafe?” he asked the bartender as he and Jett approached the bar.

She pointed to a man sitting at a table working on a laptop computer. “Where else would he be?”

Ronan and Jett walked over and watched him as he typed intently. When the man straightened and reached for his beer, he tried to drink and found his glass empty. Ronan waved at the barkeep. “Tawnya, can you bring us three beers, on my tab?”

The man smiled. “Oh, oh. Clutch wants something. I can smell it.”

“Maybe we just want some friendly conversation,” said Jett as he turned a chair around to sit on it backward.

Ronan pulled up a chair and sat down as well. He looked at the screen, seeing a maze of almost familiar words, numbers, and equations. “Rafe, can you check up on a person on that computer of yours, like find out shit about who they are?”

The man looked over at Ronan and grinned. “Tell me, Clutch, can you go to the minimart on that motorcycle of yours and buy a bag of chips?”

“Okay, that was a dumb question, huh?”

Jett shrugged. “I knew he could do it.”

Ronan ignored his friend’s contribution, since that hadn’t really been in doubt. They hadn’t needed to discuss this plan, since they were so in sync. The idea of someone threatening Tessa was enough to stoke his inner beast, and he knew it was the same for Jett.

“Yeah. Dumb. Fact is, I can find out almost anything about anyone, even people not dumb enough to get themselves into the system.”

“Even if they don’t use computers?”

“The other guy like you? Sure. I can find out about you in a heartbeat, dude. But then you’re easy pickings because law enforcement does all the hard work for me. They’ve got your address, the garage address, your cell phone number, and your rap sheet. All I do is hack your parole officer’s computer, and I can access more shit than any two people would ever want to know about Ronan Vonn.”

He paused, looking at Jett. “Now, you might be a bit more difficult. You don’t have much of an online presence, and you’ve never been caught, so you aren’t in the system. It’s easier ‘cause you do have a file with CPS from when you were a foster kid.”
