“Giselle, you know I’m always on your side, but I wonder if you might have a biased perspective on all this,” Gemma suggested gently.

“Of course I’m biased. Tortured Hearts is everything to me. Well, other than you guys, of course. If I’m not even doing this right, what do I have? How can I possibly give up control to these totally random guys Bruce hired?” Giselle implored.

“What do you mean ‘random’? Asher Tate co-wrote that super-catchy pop song earlier this year. Oh, I don’t remember the musician’s name, but I remember his. I’ve read articles about this mysterious, lyrical genius named Asher Tate who’s won a bunch of awards for his songwriting skills. He’s the real deal,” said Gemma earnestly.

“Well, I don’t know who he is,” Giselle resisted.

“Right, and I recognize Blaze Norton’s name because he worked on an album with this singer I shared a stage with in Tampa. We didn’t get to chat for long, but she told me all about how handsome and talented he was. She said he had eyes like a glacier or something like that? Oh, and he rides a motorcycle?” Gentry added.

“I didn’t really… I mean… I didn’t see his eyes,” Giselle lied. “Or his bike.”

“Maybe you’ll get a chance to,” her cousin said with an exaggerated wink.

Gemma nudged her. “Don’t pressure her,” she scolded. Then, to Giselle, she added, “I think you should give it a chance. Even if it doesn’t work out, you can show Mr. Jimenez that you really tried. He can’t force it if it’s not meant to be. Nobody can force destiny.”

“But we got off on the wrong foot. I already fired the guys,” Giselle said.

“I have a feeling Bruce gets the final say on that,” Gentry broke it to her. “I think you’re going to have to make an effort, even if it’s the last thing you wanna do.”

Giselle slumped. “You’re right. Of course. It just pisses me off, you know?”

“Don’t look at it as a punishment. See it as an opportunity,” offered Gemma. “Maybe your next record can be a really angry one.”

Giselle laughed despite herself.

“Besides, you’re a force of nature, Giselle. These guys won’t know what hit ‘em. You’ll have them either whipped into shape or wrapped around your finger in no time,” Gentry said.

“Alright. You convinced me. I’ll give those nerds a chance,” Giselle sighed. “But I’m telling you right now… if they think they can control me, they’re in for a rude awakening.”
