I’ve tried to let that go, to move on. Maybe this is another step in the process.

“It was two years ago this week,” I tell them.

Sabrina turns to put it back in the closet, but I stop her. “No. Don’t. I think I want to try it on.” Maybe this can be another step in moving on.

“You don’t have to, Belles. You have a ton of other dresses in there. My mother would love your closet.” Sabrina eyes me warily.

Nattie squeezes my hand, giving me the strength to do this. “Nope. I’m not sure, but let’s give it a try.”

“It really is a pretty dress, Belles.” Nattie stands up, taking the gorgeous gown from Sabrina and hanging it on the bathroom door.

Chloe walks into my closet. “I’ll bet you have a killer pair of shoes in here too.” She looks back at us. “Brina, help me find some shoes.”

Nattie is sitting on my counter when I walk into the bathroom. Turning my back to her, she unties the bow at the back of my neck, and I slip out of my dress.

Once I have the new gown on, Nat zips the small zipper up, her breath catching in her throat. I turn my head and see unshed tears glistening in her sky-blue eyes. “Annabelle, this dress is perfection. You would have made such a beautiful Giselle.”

Smiling a sad smile, I turn and grasp her shoulders. “Chase your dreams, Nattie. Chase every single one of them because you never know when they’re going to change.”

When I walk back out into my bedroom, I’m met by Chloe whistling, “Damn, bitch.”

“Seriously, Belles, you look fierce.” Sabrina holds up a shoebox and purse. “These were together. They looked like they matched the dress.”

I slip the shoes on, then turn to look at myself in the white wrought iron cheval mirror in the corner of my room. The gown is a gorgeous champagne color with a high square neckline and skinny beaded straps. It’s entirely backless and fits tightly, then it flares into a trumpet skirt with just the hint of a train. It matches my skin perfectly, giving a sexy illusion to it.

“Annabelle, you give a whole new meaning to business up front and party in the back. I’d definitely do you now.” Chloe’s smiling and not paying any attention to Sabrina as she knocks her off the bed.

“I think you found the dress, Belles.” Sabrina glares at Chloe, who’s gotten up and is now trying to wrestle Brina to the floor.

Nattie walks up behind me and gently pulls my hair up, tucking it into a bun. Her voice drops low. “Flawless, Belles.”

The tears are right there, but I force them down. With trembling lips, I smile. “Thanks, Nattie.”

Her fingers find mine, and she squeezes my hand again.

I think it’s time to make some new memories.
