“Amelia.”

What? I hear Sam’s voice, but it sounds like it’s underwater.

“Snow, look at me.” His deep baritone registers in my brain, but I can’t manage the simple task he demands until he wraps me in his arms and holds me to him. “Stay with me. Breathe with me. You’ve got to breathe.” He takes one of my hands and moves it to cover his heart. “Feel that.” Then he places my other hand over my own heart. “Feel us. Stay with me. You’re safe. I promise you on my life, you’re safe. I made sure you’ll always be safe.” Sam’s lips press against my forehead and linger.

Everything starts to slow down, and the vice around me begins to loosen as his words take hold.

I’m safe.

I’ve been dreaming of those words for longer than I can remember.

So why am I so angry?

“Sam.” My voice is hoarse as the first tear tracks down my cheek. “Please tell me you didn’t handle my life without talking to me about it first.”

I wait for an answer that isn’t coming. “Please tell me you respect me enough to talk to me before you make decisions that could cost me my life.” Rising from the couch, I look down at this man I want the impossible from. Because the one thing Sam has never done is lie to me. He won’t start now. “Sam, tell me you didn’t. That you know me well enough to know I could never forgive you for doing this.” Another tear falls. “I trusted you.”

“Snow, I didn’t...”

“Don’t you dare,” I wipe the tears from my eyes. “I can’t look at you right now. You need to leave. “

“Sn—” I glare at the use of my nickname. “Amelia, listen to me.” His voice is demanding, but I refuse to bend.

“Get. Out.” My words leave me more broken than I already am.

With those two words, I turn around and walk slowly into my bedroom, slamming the door behind me. I sit down on the edge of my bed and wait.

I listen for his next move.

There are no footsteps on the creaky wooden floors. No movement.

But then I hear it. “This isn’t over, Amelia. I’ll do anything to make sure you’re safe. I guaranteed that yesterday. You’re safe. I protect what’s mine. And you, Snow, are mine. So, this isn’t over.” The words aren’t said in anger.

There’s a conviction in his voice I recognize.

It petrifies me.

I can’t be his.

I refuse to be his.

I refuse to be anyone’s.

It hurts too much.
