When someone knocks on the door later that afternoon, the three of us yell in sync for them to go away before the door creaks open and Amelia enters with a tray of food.

My girl walks into this room full of killers with her back straight and head held high.

She cowers to no man. “Sorry to interrupt. But Sam needs to take his medicine, and he hasn’t eaten anything all day.” She places the tray down on the credenza under the window, then hands me a fresh glass of water. “Your nurse is here.” She eyes Dean with one brow raised as he reaches for a sandwich.

Dean pulls his hand back and mutters, “Sorry.”

Snow continues, “He’s asking questions I don’t have answers to.”

Nick stands. “I think we’re good for now, Sam. What do you guys think?”

“I’m good. I know what I’ve got to do,” Dean adds.

“Okay. Meet back here tomorrow morning.” I tell them.

Uncle Nick sizes up Amelia. “Any chance one of those sandwiches is for me?”

She smiles at him, her brown eyes sparkling. “Take whatever you want. We made plenty.”

“Got any cookies?” Dean asks, licking his lips like a fucking dog.

She nods. “Yeah. There are chocolate chip cookies in the kitchen.”

“Hey. Don’t give him my cookies.” I pull on the pocket of her hoodie. “I don’t share.”

She takes a step back from me. “And I don’t make cookies for men who should still be in the hospital.”

Uncle Nick whistles, surprised by the way she just spoke to me.

Probably impressed.

The fucker.

Amelia glances his way, then softens her tone. “Whatever.” She plants her hands on her hips and glares, and my cock jumps to attention. “I made them for you anyway. I think you can manage to share. Besides, the guys who have been here since yesterday have been eating them all afternoon. I made enough to stock the bakery for days. So there’ll be plenty left for you, Sam.”

She baked for my men.

Jesus. I glance over to the guys. “You good?”

They both agree and go on the hunt for cookies. My fucking cookies.

Dean shuts the door behind him, and I slump a little in my chair, allowing my muscles to relax for the first time today. The move is small. Insignificant. But Snow notices.

Stepping back into me, she turns and sits on the edge of the desk. “Sam. You’ve got to stop. You shouldn’t even be home, and you’re pushing yourself way too hard.”

How have I been so oblivious that I haven’t noticed before now? She’s wearing my old clothes. I run both hands slowly up the outside of her thighs. Knowing I’ve never touched her like this before, I enjoy the sudden intake of her breath. No hiding that reaction. “Where’d you find these?” A slow smile appears on her face. “I like seeing you in my clothes.”

She doesn’t push me off like I’m expecting her to. Instead, her hands rest on mine. “They were in the back of your closet in a bin. I don’t have any clothes here, Sam. I’m going to need to go home.”

My gut instinct is to tell her no, but I hold that in check. “Amelia. Please don’t make me be a dick.” Well, I tried.

She laughs at me. “A wise man once asked me if anyone could make Sam Beneventi do something he didn’t want to do.” She leans in closer to my ear. Her warm breath, a caress against my skin. “I’ve got a business to run, Sam. The world isn’t stopping because of all this.” Amelia motions to the room around us. “I have to go home.”

I move my hands to the desk and stand up, forcing her to lift her head to meet my eyes. My hands move to either side of her face and hold her there. “I need you here. With me. Please, Snow.”

The words are out before I have time to think about them.

I’ve never needed anyone before.
