I hate knowing that this woman thinks so little of me that she’d believe for a single second that I may not want to be involved in my own child’s life. When did that happen?

That’s the first thing that needs to change.

“Scarlet, you may be the one carrying this baby. But it’s our baby. He’s as much mine as yours. And I’m not a man who would ever be okay being a part-time or nonexistent father.”

She bristles and readjusts herself on her bed. “First, this baby is going to be a girl. Second, are you saying you’re going to fight me for custody because I’ll have my lawyers—”

“That’s not what I meant, Scarlet. We’ll figure it out as we go. No need to get upset. No need to get lawyers involved. I think the first thing we should do is get to know each other again.” A plan begins to take shape.

“I’m fairly sure we know each other, Cade.” Her pretty eyes roll.

“No, duchess. We knew each other. But that was a lifetime ago. We were kids. I don’t know about you, but I’m a completely different man now from the boy you knew. Pretty sure you are too.”

“I guess I am.”

As Scarlet runs her teeth over her bottom lip, I flash back to the way she used to do that when she was uncertain or nervous. Not often. But it was her tell.

Scarlet Kingston has always been so fucking sure of herself and her place in the world that, even as teenagers, I loved forcing her out of her comfort zone.

Convincing Scarlet to go wild and break out of the perfect little box her family kept her in was one of my favorite things to do.

“Let me take you to dinner, Scarlet.” I watch those blue eyes consider it.

“You never were good at asking, were you, Saint?”

I may never have been good at asking, but I always knew when she used my nickname, she was about to say yes. And it was so much fucking fun when she said yes.

“Fine. Let’s do dinner Monday night. We’ve got a lot to figure out.”

You can say that again.
