Carys:We don’t have that much stuff. I’m almost done packing. All I’ve got are two suitcases, three plastic totes, and my clothes I was planning to leave on the hangers.

Em:CC, when a man offers to lift heavy things, you let him lift the heavy things and then watch those sexy muscles work. I’ll be home in the afternoon, and they’ll be with me.

Carys:And when do you plan on packing?

Em:Have I told you how much I love you yet?

Carys:YOU OWE ME.

Em:I’ve got scoop.

Carys:What kind of scoop?

Em:Coop scoop. He asked about you and Theo. He wanted to know if you two dated.

Carys:And what did you tell him?

Em:That you guys had hooked up.

Carys:You’re evil. Why would you do that?

Em:To see if he’d get jealous.

Carys:And... did he?

Em:Oh yeah. Not a happy camper. Not even after I told him it was last year, and now you guys are just friends. No way that boy isn’t interested in you, CC.

Carys:Fine. I’ll pack your stupid stuff.

I look at the time on my phone and contemplate calling my best friend, Daphne. But it’s nearly midnight in Kroydon Hills, and she’s not the nicest person when she’s woken up. Damn it.

He seemed jealous. What am I supposed to do with that? Is he interested? I mean... I was already starting to think he might be. A hope I’ve been scared to have takes hold in me. It may only be a small thing now, but everything has to start somewhere.

How do you know when to take the leap?

How do you know if it’s worth the risk?

Carys’s dormdidn’t seem as small the other night, when it was just the two of us in here, as it does now with Axe, Linc, Trick, and me all inside the door, waiting for instructions. The girls don’t seem to have that much to move.

Emerson circles her arms around Linc’s neck and whispers something in his ear before he smacks her ass and grabs three suitcases. “Come on, guys, let’s get this done and get out of here.”

“Oh yeah, Linc. What do you get when you get this done? Ya gonna share with the team?” Axe grabs a couple of bags and follows behind Linc.

“Fuck off, Axe.” Linc’s definitely not sharing this time. Pretty sure they’ve shared a few times before, but he’s possessive as hell around Emerson already. She means something to him. Something big... important. And Linc isn’t the kind of guy who gets attached. He’s had a shit life, and I count myself lucky to have him as one of my friends.

The door shuts behind them, and Emerson tosses two plastic totes at Trick. “We really appreciate your help, guys.” She adds one more on top of the pile, effectively covering his eyes, and opens the door for him. “Follow my voice to the elevator.”

Carys is bent over in the closet, wearing gray cotton booty shorts, the curve of her ass peeking out, and a black Kings T-shirt withSinclairwritten across the back and Declan’s number displayed under it. The fucked-up caveman in me doesn’t like my brother’s number on her back, even if my name is above it. But the logical side of my brain knows this is my stepsister. Declan’s stepsister. And it shouldn’t matter that she’s wearing that shirt.

Fucking logic’s got nothing on how I feel since she invaded my every waking thought and half my damn dreams a week ago. If her brother knew the thoughts I’m having right now... Well, he’d kill me, and rightfully so.

Fuck. It’s like my damn heart is going to war with my brain.

And when did my heart get involved?

I clear my throat, and thankfully, she stands up. “What do you need me to carry?”

Carys points toward the box on her desk. “That’s my sewing machine. Could you please be extra careful with it?”
