I nodded and walked past them. Shado hesitated, but I pushed her ahead of me out into the hall. Miranda had challenged Tate’s authority. They’d have to settle that on their own.

“We can’t just leave him with those two,” she said. “What if—”

I shook my head. “We can’t get involved in pack business.”

“They’re arguing about you,” she complained as a loud thud echoed from the room. “That makes it our business, too.”

I fought the urge to roll my eyes. Jackson was alive. He’d survived surgery. I had to see him. I had to talk to Isaac. I didn’t have time to worry about anyone else. “Tate is their superior. If you get involved, you’ll undermine his position in the pack. Believe me, when Jackson and I started dating, it was hell sitting on the sidelines. But it has to be done.”

“Tate is our friend.”

I stifled a groan behind my hand. “Yes, he is, and we both know thatour friendwouldn’t appreciate you making him look like a pup.”

“I-I-I know, but—”

“You can stay here,” I said. “But I’ve got to go see Jackson.”

Shado’s jaw dropped, and I continued down the hall without her. I felt bad leaving her. She’d done so much for me, but how could I stay when Jackson waited for me upstairs?

Jackson’s room was on the far side of the hospital, in the quietest wing they could find, but as I rounded the corner, Miranda’s voice echoed off the walls. How had she gotten up to the third floor before me?

A warning tingled at the back of my neck. Was the Miranda in the chapel a shapeshifter? Was this the shifter? Instinctively, I flexed my fingers at my sides, ready for a fight. I couldn’t be sure of anyone anymore. At least, not until we figured out a way to detect her magic.

I took another step into the hall and the four men standing opposite Miranda came into focus. It was Isaac, Tate, and two of the younger wolves. Kyle and his twin brother Liam.

“You have to let me in,” Miranda demanded. “I have to see him. I have to know that he’s okay.”

Isaac folded his arms over his chest. “After the stunt you just pulled, I’m sending you home.”

“I’m not leaving until I see him,” she said, getting in his face. He was twice her size, but she refused to back down.

Isaac snapped. “I said no!”

“I have every right to be here, he’s my—”

“He’s your what?” I asked, raising my voice to match hers.

Miranda turned on her heel and snarled, her eyes flashing a dangerous shade of yellow. “He’s mine.”

Isaac tugged on the lapels of his white coat. “Go inside, Rebekah. I’ll handle this and be in momentarily.”

I snorted once without humor and took a step towards Miranda. “You’re insane if you think I’m going to let you anywhere near my husband. I tolerated your display in the chapel. Tate told you to stop. And yet, here you are. Still prattling on. You have no claim to him, Miranda. None.”

She charged forward, meeting me toe to toe. “Don’t tell me what to do, witch. I have more of a claim to him than you ever could.”

The leash around my anger snapped, and I slapped her. My hand felt like it had shattered against her jaw, but the blow was enough to make the wolf’s head snap sideways.

I grabbed a handful of her hair and snarled, “You think because you slept with him once in high school that makes you his mate? Even I know it doesn’t work like that. Now, get out of my sight before I show youexactlywhat kind of witch I am.”

I shoved Miranda and she staggered into the wall. Her head smacked the sheet rock with an audible thud.

“You bi—” Her eyes flashed yellow, and Isaac leapt between us.

“Miranda, stop!” his voice rang with the will of the Alpha and she halted. She didn’t have a choice.
