Under the power of his gaze, she clenched her teeth, and tilted her head to the side, exposing her neck. The universal sign of a wolf’s submission. “She threatened me.”

“She had every right,” he said. “Now, go home. I’ll deal with you later.”

Miranda flinched as the command sank in, and bowed her head a fraction, taking a step back. She glared at me for half a second and then marched away, chin lifted into the air. I waited until she was gone before I flexed the fingers of my throbbing hand.

Shado appeared at my side and smacked me on the shoulder. “Did you just slap a werewolf?”

“Yes, and ouch! That hurt,” I said, flinching away from her, cradling my hand against my chest.

Isaac sighed. “That was stupid, Rebekah. If she’d attacked you, it could have been catastrophic.”

“She’d never really hurt me. She knows that Jackson would never forgive her for it, and besides she burned off half her energy running up the stairs to beat me here. It’s about time for her to realize she has no claim to Jackson anymore.” I shrugged. “Speaking of, how is he? Is Jack gonna be okay?”

“He’s still sleeping but he’s gonna be fine,” Isaac said. “It will take a while for him to get back on his feet, but he’ll make a full recovery.”

Tears sprang from my eyes. “Really?”

“Yes, but, Rebekah, you should know, his heart stopped twice on the table. It’s only because of the blood donations the boys made that he started to heal on his own. Normally, something like this would have him down for two weeks at most, but the silver in those bullets poisoned him. He’s going to be weak for a while.”

“But he’ll be okay, eventually?” I raked my hands through my hair. “How long will he have to be in the hospital? I can bring him clothes or something. Make him feel comfortable.”

“I can do that,” Shado said. “You just be there for him.”

“He should only be here for two or three days, after that he can go home.” Isaac’s eyes shifted past me to look at Kyle and Liam.

“What?” I asked, following his gaze. “What’s wrong?”

“I think the best thing for Jackson is that once he’s healed, I take him to the bayou. A wolf needs his pack, and our pack lands are imbued with energy specific to our kind. Being there, running with his brothers, it’ll help him heal. It’ll make him stronger, faster.”

The same warning tingle erupted along my neck and spine. “No. He wouldn’t be safe and neither would your families. We’re—we’re in the middle of a case. And the person, the thing, that shot him got inside my wards without setting them off.”

“The other wolves can protect him.”

“You have children living in the bayou. Jackson would never forgive himself if something happened to one of them, and neither could I.”

Tate frowned. “Do you have a better idea? A safer one?”

“I’m not sure yet, but I’ll figure it out before he leaves the hospital. I promise. I won’t let that bitch of a shifter anywhere near him. Not again.”

“Wherever you go, I’d like you to bring a retinue with you. Jackson is important to us. He’s family, and we want him safe,” Isaac said.

“So do I.”

He rocked back on his heels. His spine straightened, and his eyes shifted to the floor. He wanted to say something but wasn’t sure how.

“Just spit it out,” I said. My patience for standing still was wearing thin. I could feel Jackson resting just out of my reach. My soul ached for him.

He blinked and turned to Tate. “Boys, give us some space.”

“For crying out loud.” I rolled my eyes. “I need to see my husband, so just man up and say it, Isaac. Whatever it is.”

He pressed his lips together and sighed. “You and Jack are still separated right?”

“That’s my business, not—”

“Jackson is part of my pack and you broke his heart. So, itismy business,” he said. “It’s my job to protect him, whether he lives in the bayou with us or not. You may be his wife, but that doesn’t change what he is. So, all I ask is that if you’re still separated or unreconciled once this case of yours is finished…let him go.”

“What?”
