“Let him go. Walk away for good this time. No more case work, no more running into each other on the street.”

“It’s more complicated than that. I’m a PI and he’s a cop. Our paths cross whether we want them to or not.”

“Leave the city,” he said. “You’re a private investigator, you can work anywhere. Not to mention the fact your family is richer than sin.”

“That’s not fair.”

“Life isn’t fair, and I can’t watch you tear my brother apart again. You made him choose once, don’t do it again. Choose for him. Finish this case and go.”

Of all the things Isaac could have asked me for, that was the last thing I expected. He looked like he was ready to cry.

“You can’t ask her to do that,” Shado said, stepping between us.

I met Isaac’s gaze over her shoulder. “I promise. If Jack and I can’t work it out, then I’ll set him free. I won’t make him choose. I’ll go.”

Shado whirled around, gaping at me. “Rebekah? You can’t.”

“I’ve already hurt him once. I won’t do it again. I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure he’s okay,” I said.

Isaac shifted on his feet and squared his shoulders again. “Alright. Jack is in there. He’s still unconscious. Once he wakes up, we’ll check him over, and I can figure out a better timetable for his recovery.”

I nodded. “Thank you.”

The alpha turned to Liam and Kyle. “Let’s go, you two. I’ve got other jobs for you.”

“Well, it was nice to see you again, Rebekah,” Liam said, shoving his brother after Isaac. “Tate has my number if you need anything.”

I gave him a weak smile. “Thanks.”

“Yeah, thanks,” Shado muttered. I could feel her glaring at me, but my eyes were on Jackson’s room.

Tate clapped his hands together. “I’m gonna go get some snacks from the food court. Do you want anything?”

I shook my head. “No, thank you.”

“I’ll meet you down there,” Shado responded. “I’ve gotta smack some sense into my cousin first.”

Tate departed without another word, and the hallway chilled considerably.

I heard Shado inhale a deep breath, but I cut her off before she could say a word. “Isaac had every right to ask me that, Shado. I broke Jackson’s heart. If I’m going to do it again, I have to make sure it’s the last time. I don’t want to, I want us to find a way to work through all the shitty things I’ve done, but if we can’t—” I exhaled a shaky breath. “If we can’t, then that’s it. I’m going to let him go. I’ll use a spell to compel him to sign the divorce papers and I’ll be gone. He’ll never have to see, hear, or think about me ever again.”

“He’ll never agree to that, and you know it.”

I shrugged. “He won’t have a choice.”

“Rebekah!” She grabbed me by the chin and forced me to look at her. “You can’t put a spell on him. That’s not fair.”

“Life’s not fair.” I was getting tired of this conversation. I wanted to see Jackson already. It wouldn’t be real until I could see him with my own two eyes. But I had one more thing to cross off my list before I could break down again. “I need you to do me a favor, Shado. I need you to go to my house, into the annex and see what you can find about shapeshifters. I also need a bag of my clothes, and a bag of his ready for when he gets out of here.”

“I’ll do it,” she said, her shoulders sagging. “Do you want me to come in with you, or do you want some time alone with him?”

“Go, hang out with Tate. Relax. I’ll be fine.” I smiled at her. “You don’t have to worry.”

“I’ll always worry about you. That’s what family does,” she said, patting me on the back. “Use a message spell or something if you need me.”

I gave her a mock salute. “Will do.”

She chuckled and disappeared down the hall, leaving me alone. I turned back to Jackson’s door, and suddenly I was terrified. What if he still looked pale? What if he was still cold? My heart ached with worry and want at the same time.
