I rip the door open, but it’s empty.

“Maddy!”

I dart toward our hut to get Dani. I see others running toward the fire, their silhouettes orange in the glow. I hear shouts. The whole beach is illuminated by the fire, the orange glow faint but surreal like there is a party going on.

My heart pounds in my chest. I am approaching the bungalow fast when I hear the male voice, “Hey! Here!”

It’s not Kai, but it’s coming from behind the hut.

And I follow, on reflex.

It’s one of the guys, I’m sure.

Except when I turn the corner, hands yank me into the dark so fast I don’t realize what’s happening until my back is pressed against someone’s body, strong arm around me, almost suffocating, pulling me further back, another clamping my mouth.

And a hiss comes into my ear. “Not a fucking sound, understood?”

The explosion is sosudden that it startles me for a moment. But my reflexes work faster, and I am already running toward the Common Lounge that is on fire.

Water.

Buckets.

Weapons.

The options flicker in my mind as I dart into the kitchen where several people are scrambling around.

“The fire extinguisher is in one of the cupboards!” Maddy shouts.

A bunch of people yank the cupboard doors open, pulling everything out onto the floor, tripping, scrambling, bumping into each other.

“Here!” someone shouts.

Guff yanks the extinguisher out of Mia’s hands and runs toward the lounge.

Everyone follows, but I rummage through the utensils and grab a knife, then another, then follow the rest.

Guff, his body tall and strong, stands like a firefighter in front of the fire and sprays it with a stream of foam.

“Stand back!” he shouts as he does.

The fire is crackling and blazing into the night sky. The wind shoots the flames to one side, then another.

I search around.

This is not the Savages’ doing—there were boats.

I step back, scanning the faces and more importantly, the dark beach.

My heart races. There is no panic. There is adrenalin shooting through my blood. So familiar. I love it. It’s like a breath of fresh air. There is a tragedy happening, or one is yet to come, but my stupid-ass heart is pounding with excitement.

I am ready.

Bo and the rest come running, guns in their hands, faces illuminated by the orange glow.
