“I could say the same.”

Katura walks to the side, studying the house as if she’s never been here. But Archer doesn’t look at her. Or me. His eyes are locked on Kai.

“If you weren’t a dickhead,” Archer says, “and we’d had this talk years ago, you could’ve spared us all this circus.”

“If you hadn’t pushed me into the fire, we wouldn’t have been here.”

Archer’s eyes narrow as he takes a tiny step closer. “If you hadn’t gone behind your best friend’s back and stolen his girlfriend, everything would’ve been fine.”

“You know that’s not what happened.”

“You know you fucked up.”

There is no win-win with Archer. He thinks he is always right.

Katura is behind him now, just stepping around carefully. I try not to look at her, but she is up to something.

Kai takes a step forward. “You fucked up when you took what was supposed to be mine.”

Archer’s laughter is lacking cheerfulness and is pure evil. “It’s fucking pussy, Droga. Cock-chasers. Gold-diggers. Adrenalin-junkies.” There is that word again. Katura’s head snaps in his direction. “You can’t see the bigger picture. There is no—”

What comes next is so quick and unexpected that I duck on reflex.

But everything lasts only several seconds.

Katura jumps on Archer from behind.

Her legs wrap around his hips.

Her arm locks around his neck, pulling him back.

There is a flicker of surprise on Archer’s face.

His mouth starts opening as Katura tightens her hold around his neck.

I don’t even have time to react when, in seconds, Archer’s eyes flutter closed and his body starts sagging.

I gape, watching everything as if in slow motion.

What…?

Katura lets go, jumping softly like a cat back on the floor, and holds Archer’s body under his arms, letting it slide softly onto the floor.

“I’m so done with this trash talk,” she murmurs.

And the room sinks into silence.

“What just happened?” I whisper.

I am paralyzed, staring in horror at Archer’s motionless body splayed on the floor like he just decided to take a nap.

“What the hell…” Kai’s whisper comes from next to me.

“Chill,” Katura says. When I raise my eyes to her, she is wearing a satisfied smile as she stands over Archer. “He went night-night for some time. He’ll be fine.”

“Are. You. Insane?” Kai exhales the words. “Do you know what he’ll do to us—toyou—when he comes to?”

Katura cocks her head at Kai. “Then I suggest you disappear.”
