“He was the closest thing I’ve had to a brother once.”

My heart aches at the words. I bring Callie’s hands to my lips and kiss them, gazing at her for a moment. Days ago, I would’ve been too embarrassed to do this. Now, I feel like we are Bonnie and Clyde.

“I don’t care when Crone messes with me,” I say finally. “But I can’t stand him messing with you, Callie.”

She smiles and shakes her head. “He won’t anymore. You know he won’t.” I nod. “Because I might shoot him again but not miss.” She laughs.

God, she is so calm that I feel like I am in therapy that finally works.

Her smile turns mischievous.

“What are you thinking?” I ask, my lips pressed to her hands that I don’t let go.

“I don’t care where we go, Kai. I can go through hell again as long as I am with you.”

She pulls her hand from mine and taps her hooked forefinger under my chin like I do it to her.

I chuckle, pull her up onto my lap, and wrap my arms around her waist.

She cups my face and kisses me softly, then pulls away and presses her forehead to mine.

“Just promise that we’ll stick together. You and I, Kai. Always together. It’s the only way it will work.”

Her blue eyes—I will burn the world down for them. Her hands cupping my face—I can stay in this feeling forever.

“Kai Droga,” she says with a playful smile. “You are the only person in the world I love.” Her smile grows into a grin as she whispers, “Crazy, isn’t it?”

The last weeks were crazy, unraveling both of us like the Rose of Jericho, the flower that can stay dormant for years and blooms when it finally gets water.

“You too, baby girl.”

“With you, I am ready to go anywhere—even to space.”

We chuckle and kiss.

“Here is the thing,” she says, her tone suddenly serious. “Back on the mainland, there is nothing. Archer, the asshole that he is, is right. I still hate him, I won’t deny it. But the mainland is not well. Not by a mile. But on Zion, I feel like I am leaving my family behind.”

I nod. She’s only been on the island for less than a month, but she explained it perfectly. I am amazed at how far she’s come—in her feelings, thoughts, determination. As if she’s broken out of a shell and finally shows her true self. I like it. Scratch that. I fucking love it.

She brushes her lips against mine without kissing. “I will go with whatever decision you make.”

I close my eyes, being grateful to her for letting me go with this crazy idea.

“Sure?” I ask, opening my eyes and meeting her calm gaze.

“Sure. You and me.”

I press my forehead to hers. “You and me, baby girl. Always,” I say, smiling at her.

I pull away and turn toward the boat crew.

The deckhand is leaning on the cabin, smoking in irritation. The captain is at the helm, his arms crossed at his chest—watching us just like the rest of the crew like they are freaking voyeurs.

I make a circular motion above my head with my forefinger. “Boss! Turn around! We are going back!”

The words set my heart pumping.

I can see the exchange of annoyed glances, but not a word of argument.
