Resting my back against the counter, I shoot off a text to the girls.

ME: Staying with Eli tonight. Plane leaves bright and early. I’ll let you know when I make it home.

AUSTIN: Staying with him? Sleeping over?

ME: Yes.

HAYDEN: Sexing it up is more like it. She’s been holding out on the poor guy.

ME: It’s been a day. You act like I’ve been stringing him along for months or something.

HAYDEN: A day to us is like a month to them.

AUSTIN: She has a point, but I’m not encouraging you to sleep with him tonight. Not in the sexy kind of way.

ME: Good, because I’m not ready.

Neither of them reply to that remark. I’m about to shoot off another message when Austin finally replies.

AUSTIN: Is he paying special attention to your needs?

HAYDEN: OMG! You’re starting to sound like me now. Know your place, Austin. You’re the serious one. I called dibs on being the foul-mouthed comedian years ago.

ME: {laughing emoji x3}

AUSTIN: I have jokes sometimes, too.

HAYDEN: It would have been a joke if you asked if Eli had magic hands or if his dick was so big her only problem was trying to fit it in her mouth.

ME: {emoji pointing up} - this is why she’s the funny one. And BTW that was highly inappropriate.

HAYDEN: Inappropriate is my middle name.

AUSTIN: Fine. Be the funny one.

HAYDEN: No pouting. I’ll teach you the ways, my child, and you can be funny with your other friends.

ME: Don’t give her a way to replace us. We give her enough reasons without adding a map to finish the job.

AUSTIN: Don’t worry, Tay. You’re safe. Hayden, on the other hand … {Winking emoji}

HAYDEN: And here I was about to tell you I was able to take the weekend off to hang out with you skanks. Maybe I’ll work instead.

ME: NO! You’re coming to Seattle? For real???

AUSTIN: Party at my place!

ME: Girls’ day! Well, I’ll still have to work but I can see you guys every night and that’s still more than I see you right now.

The door to Eli’s villa opens but I don’t bother to look up as I continue tapping on my phone, making plans with my best friends. I need them right now. I wish I could hug them. Cry in their arms. They don’t make me feel as safe as Eli’s, but they do remind me of home.

“Whatcha doing?” Eli asks, leaning against the counter next to me.

“Making plans with the girls for when we’re in Seattle.”

“Do I get to meet the rest of the inseparable trio?”

Eli is well aware of how important Hayden and Austin are to me. He knows our history, most of it. They’re my ride or die sisters. When I told him that, he laughed uncontrollably for five minutes. He didn’t think that was a real thing.
