“You two are ridiculous,” I mumble.

“You’ve said that before, so let me remind you what I said to you.” When he doesn’t continue right away, I turn to face them, leaning back against the island. “Someone is going to come along and knock you on your ass—hello, Alexis—and you’ll find yourself agreeing to anything for one more taste.”

One more taste.

God, I’d give anything to feel her lips against mine right now. To hear her moan as my tongue explores her mouth. To be surrounded by the scent of summer rain.

“Anything,” I state more to myself than anyone else.

“Yup, and right now that means giving her space,” Declan declares, taking Kendall’s hand and tugging her down the hall. He throws his parting words over his shoulder as he goes, “It’s not an easy ride, but it’s worth it in the end.”

Anything worth anything is far from easy. Lex is a perfect fit for that category.

Picking up my phone, I slide my finger across the screen. A few seconds later and I’m staring at the list Lex and I made last night. Rule number three stands out, and I immediately know what I’m going to do.

I gently tapthe window three times and wait. I’m crouched behind a bush, the thin branches poking at my lower back. After counting the windows a handful of times, I’m ninety-nine percent sure I have the right one. Light is peeking between the curtains, but I can’t see inside.

Checking my surroundings to make sure no one is around, I tap again, this time louder. The curtains rustle, and then Lex’s eyes find mine, a look of surprise consuming her features.

“What are you doing here?” she asks, sliding the window open but not backing up so I can climb through.

That’s fine. I’m not staying anyway.

“I brought you dinner.”

“What? Why?”

“Rule number three, or did you forget already?” I joke, picking up the bag from the ground next to me and handing it to her through the window.

“I, um—”

“Rule three: The night before exams, we eat in at Micah’s apartment,” I say, reciting the line I memorized on my way over here. “Well, you have to study, so I brought dinner to you.”

“We?” she asks, looking at me with hesitation in her eyes.

“Yeah, but tonight I know you want to study alone so I’m not staying.”

“You’re not?”

There’s no missing the surprise in her voice. There’s something else there, though. Maybe a hint of sadness and regret. Like, she wants me to stay but is afraid to ask.

“No. You wanted to reschedule, and I respect that.” It’s a lie. I mean, I do respect her wishes, but it’s not what I want. I want to climb through this damn window and ravish her. Which is a big part of why I can’t stay because I would distract her. That’s one of her biggest concerns, and I don’t want to prove to her that she’s right.

“And if I asked you to come in?”

“Sorry, love. I can’t. I promised not to come between you and your studies, so I have to go. However, I wanted to make sure you got yourself some dinner.”

Just one kiss can’t hurt anything, right?

Leaning my head in the window, Lex reads my mind and tilts her chin up for me. I brush my lips across hers once, twice, and then press more firmly. Her hands cup my cheeks as she takes control of the kiss, causing me to lose my balance when she tries to pull me through the window headfirst.

“Nope,” I state firmly. “I have to go. You need to eat and study. In that order.”

“What if I already ate? Will you stay for a few minutes?”

God, I want to. But the devious smirk on her face tells me that it won’t just be for a few minutes. And the tent in my shorts agrees with her sentiment.

“We both know how that will turn out,” I say instead of answering her questions. “I’ll call you tomorrow. Good luck on your exam.”
