It’s beenthree days since I’ve seen Lex and I’m starting to go crazy. Thoughts of her keep me up at night. When I do finally fall asleep, it’s her face I see. Her voice I hear.

Hell, in last night’s dream I was reading to her. From a textbook. We were both fully clothed.

I’m not even having sexy dreams about her, yet I wake up rock hard and in need of release.

What concerns me the most is that my need to see her has had less to do with the ache in my groin, and more with the ache in my chest. In my soul.

I rub my fist over the center of my chest as the thought crosses my mind.

What the hell is happening to me?

It’s not like she left me. We’ve texted every day, but she wanted to spend some time with Piper. Girl time. Just the two of them.

And tonight, it’s girls’ night at Lo and Kendall’s apartment.

Movie Mondays.

As much as I love that they all get together a few times a week, today it’s cramping my style. The only highlight is that I get to spend the afternoon with her. Her class gets out at noon and her shift at the library ends at three o’clock.

Which is why I’ve been sitting at a table, watching her study behind the circulation desk for the last ten minutes, counting down until she can clock out. That should be any second considering the guy I’m assuming is her replacement just walked up behind her.

I’m about to stand when I notice the look in his eye.

He’s checking her out.

Her ass specifically. She’s leaning forward, completely immersed in studying, pen flying across her paper as she takes notes. Her hair is falling in long, wavy curls, shielding part of her face from me. Every few minutes she’ll push it back, tuck it behind her ear, but it just falls forward again.

I was going to let her know I was here, but I didn’t want to interrupt her. She was in the zone, and she still is. She hasn’t looked up since I walked in. Hasn’t moved, aside from shifting her weight from one foot to the other every so often.

Which is why she has no idea he’s standing behind her, staring at her like a piece of meat he wants to devour.

My meat.

My woman.

Clearing my throat, loudly so the sound echoes, I watch as Lex glances up at me. Her eyes widen in surprise as she pushes herself upright, her smile growing. Her attention wasn’t the only one I caught, though. Replacement dude is glaring at me over her shoulder.

When Lex motions for me to wait a minute, I nod and keep my eyes trained on the guy behind her. She turns around, startled at how close he is to her. They have a short conversation, she shows him something on a clipboard and then the computer, before packing up her things and heading in my direction.

Now I know why he was staring at her ass.

Lex is wearing a pair of skin-tight, black leggings, her T-shirt barely skimming the waistband. Images of her bent over in front of me flood my mind and a shot of need surges through me. I resist the urge to adjust myself as I stand, praying no one can see my physical reaction to her.

“Hey,” she says, pressing up on her tiptoes to kiss me on the cheek, a move I wasn’t prepared for since PDA is a big no-no in her mind. Not that I would ever push her away.

“Hey, yourself. You ready to get out of here?” I ask, wrapping my arm around her possessively, pulling her into my side, since dude’s watching us from the spot Lex just vacated behind the desk.

“Let me run and clock out, and then we can go,” she says, dropping her bag to the ground with a thump before rushing through the stacks.

I know I shouldn’t go over there. It’d be best if I kept my mouth shut. But that’s not who I am, and he was looking at my girl. He needs to know it’s not okay. That she’s taken and I don’t appreciate the way he was checking her out without her knowing.

“Excuse me,” I say as I approach. He saw me coming and bolted to the other side of the desk, rearranging books in an attempt to look busy.

“Can I help you find something?” he asks without glancing in my direction.

“No, I’ve found what I came here looking for. My girlfriend. The one you were checking out a few minutes ago.” His back stiffens but he doesn’t reply. “Word of advice, I’d stick to checking out books if I were you.”
