“Clever,” he mumbles.

“I’m sorry. What did you say?”

“Clever,” he repeats, turning around finally. He pushes his glasses higher up on his nose with his middle finger, a silent gesture I don’t miss.

“I can think of a few more ways to cleverly deter you from looking in her direction again if you want,” I threaten.

To his credit, the guy doesn’t even flinch, though the look in his eyes tells me he’s scared. “I’ve known Alexis a long time. There’s never been a boyfriend before. We’ll see how long this lasts.”

Clenching my fists to keep from jumping over the counter and throat punching this dick, I let out a huff of laughter and stare him down. “First and last boyfriend she’ll ever need. Keep that in mind.”

Walking away before I can say more, Lex appears as soon as I reach the table I was sitting at. With her bag over my shoulder, I thread our fingers together and we walk in silence out of the library. She doesn’t spare the guy a glance, even when I hear him call her name.

“Who’s the guy that replaced you?” I ask as we approach her dorm.

“That’s Bill. He’s actually my boss.”

“Your boss?”

“Yeah. Why?”

“Your boss was checking you out. Staring at your ass.”

“Seriously?”

“Yeah. I may have informed him you were taken.” I know I need to tell her, so she doesn’t hear it from him. Which, judging by his creeper status, leads me to believe he will rat me out the first chance he gets. And more than likely blow our encounter out of proportion.

“May have or did?”

“Did,” I clarify.

“Why?”

“Because I wanted him to stop looking at you the way he was.”

“You do realize you can’t control the way people look at me, right? Just like I can’t control the three sets of female eyes that openly gawked at you in the five minutes it took us to walk here from the library,” she points out as she unlocks her door and pushes it open.

“I get that but the way he was looking at you worried me. Like maybe he was going to touch you in a way you wouldn’t invite.”

“And if that ever happens, I’ll kick him in the balls and run away. Just like my grandpa taught me to do,” she jokes, but it doesn’t make me feel better about the guy.

There are guys who don’t know how to take no for an answer. He could be one of them. You can’t always tell just by looking at someone. Sometimes it’s the ones you least expect.

“Well, if Bill ever makes a move on you or touches you in a way that makes you uncomfortable, I want you to tell me.”

“You gonna beat him up for me?” she asks, turning to face me. The lift of her brow tells me she’s finding our conversation humorous. I don’t find it the least bit entertaining.

“If you ask me nicely and make it worth my while,” I say, attempting to lighten the mood. I only have a few hours with her and I sure as hell don’t want to spend them talking about her creepy boss, Bill.

Or talking at all if she’s okay with that.

“Ha, ha. So, what’s on our agenda this afternoon?” Walking into her room, Lex tosses her bag on her bed and plops down beside it.

“What do you want to do? I was thinking we could make out for a few hours. Maybe pretend to watch a movie.”

Talk.

Hell. It’s the last thing I want to do but I also know we need to. Kendall brought up a few good points the other day. There are things I need to ask Lex. Questions I need her to answer. And as much as I know Kendall has the answers I covet, I need to get them from Lex herself.
