"Good, good. I was just calling to check and see how Piper's hand is today."

And there it is. She's showing her cards. I should fold, but I'm not going to. I'm going to make her ask me what she really called to ask.

"The doctor said the burn wasn't as bad as we thought it was. He wrapped her hand and sent us on our way."

"That's good. I'm glad it wasn't more serious."

"Me too."

The line goes silent. If she's waiting for me to confess my recent sins, she's going to have to wait forever because I don't like to kiss and tell, especially when the person asking is my mother.

"Anything else? I have a few things I need to do today."

"No, no. I just wanted to make sure she was doing okay."

"Maybe you should call her then," I suggest, regretting it immediately. The last thing I want is for Piper to get a call from my mother. I may be able to skirt around her questions, but Piper would be caught off guard. "Or I can let you know when I see her on Monday."

"You won't see her before then?"

Damn it! I opened the door I was attempting to keep closed.

"I don't expect to, but I usually see her on campus on Mondays. We have a class in the same building."

"I see. Well, okay. I can just call her, I guess. I mean, I figured you might know more since she stayed the night with you last night, but apparently you forgot to ask how her hand was. You must have been busy doing other things."

Holy hell.

I can't even believe my mother's audacity right now.

"Mom." My voice is filled with warning.

"What? I'm happy for you two. It's clear you both like each other. I just wish you'd taken a moment to check on her wellbeing, that's all."

"Please, stop," I beg. "And don't call Piper. Her hand is fine. Her roommate was going to help her change the bandage. And for the love of God, please don't tell people she stayed the night here. It's not what you think."

Well, my intentions weren't what she thinks they were. It wasn't a planned 'activity' when I brought her here last night. It was, however, a very welcome direction.

"So you didn't sleep with the intern last night?"

"How do I even begin to answer your asinine question? Let's see... Okay. One, yes, she slept here last night. In my bed. Slept, Mother. Because she fell asleep on the way back from the hospital. Two, even if something had happened, it's none of your business. Three, in what universe is it ever okay to call your son and ask if he had sex? It's not, Mom. Ever."

My mother squeals, interrupting my rant.

"What the hell was that for?"

"I like her, JJ. A lot. And I know you do too. Don't screw this up."

My jaw drops open when my mother hangs up on me.

What the hell?
