His grin is deliciously wickedas he makes me a promise I know he'll keep. Which makes me want to get the hell out of here even faster. One look at Julian in that Thor costume and I was ready to mount him. When his intoxicating scent wrapped around me, I felt the moisture pool between my legs. And when he touched me for the first time in what felt like years instead of days, I almost came on the spot.

But my real undoing is when he whispered my favorite three words without even realizing he was saying it.

My pretty girl.

There was no way I was staying at the party any longer after that. I want to be alone with Julian. To show him I'm sorry, rather than tell him. Let my actions speak louder than my words.

And we're almost out the door when I hear Max shouting, causing me to stop dead in my tracks when I catch sight of him holding a guy against a wall by the collar of his costume.

The Joker.

Makes me wonder if this started as a bad joke or if Max is really threatening him. I mean, Max is dressed as James Gordon, the good cop from Gotham City. The Joker was known to terrorize Gotham. Maybe this is for show. Maybe Max is pretending to arrest him.

And now that I'm thinking about it, Finn is dressed as Batman.

Did they even realize they came dressed as more of a couple than Finn and Lo?

Now is not the time to overthink everyone's costumes. Because as I take in the situation, I notice there's a scared looking kid pressed against a wall. Max has drawn a crowd. And he's in the kid’s face, growling at him.

"I warned you."

"I swear, I didn't do anything." The kid’s hands are shaking at his side. He's not putting up a fight. He's not even trying to shake Max off of him. He's hanging against the wall like a limp noodle, taking Max's wrath.

"That's not what it looked like. Your hands were... And your tongue. She..."

Max drops the kid from the wall, but he doesn't run like I expect him to. He stands tall and waits for Max to finish his incoherent sentences.

Since when aren't people afraid of Max?

Because this kid, now that his feet are on solid ground, isn't showing him an ounce of fear. He looks ready to stand up to him. To fight Max. Which would be a mistake. He finds that out the second Max takes a step toward him, fists clenched at his side.

Julian is pulling Max back before I even have to ask.

"Calm the fuck down, man. What is wrong with you?"

"I warned him. I fucking warned him!"

Max is still clenching his fists at his side as he stares at the poor kid over Julian's shoulder. Joker looks familiar, but I can't place him with the paint on his face. It's smudged now, and you can see he started to sweat at some point tonight. Whether that had to do with Max, or whatever was going on before, I have no idea. But there are streaks running down his temples and one that cuts directly between his eyes.

"Leo, go. I've got this." Julian's voice is commanding, sending a chill up my spine. I like when he takes charge. I've seen and heard it in the kitchen, but here, in front of others, it does something to me. Not that I wasn't already ready to jump him.

Wait, Leo? Isn't that Max's little brother. The fraternity pledge that was talking with Evie at the last party.

Hitting on her is more like it.

I saw the way he was looking at her. Drooling. Slowly closing the distance between them. Acting like a friend when it was clear he was interested in getting to know her better. On a morepersonallevel.

Julian drags Max in the opposite direction Leo flees, and I follow behind them, the crowd parting like the Red Sea. I can feel anger vibrating off Max in waves, and judging by the looks others are giving him, they can too.

Once we're out the front door and down the long, narrow drive, Julian finally releases Max who lets out a deep, guttural scream as he stares up at the sky.

Someone calling Batman for help?

I can't say it out loud, so I think it instead and giggle to myself.

"Talk," is all Julian says when Max begins to pace the sidewalk.
