Snow Globes

Walking into the pharmacy,I keep my head down. This town is small. Everyone knows everyone. There are no secrets, not even among friends. If I really am pregnant, I'd like to be the one to tell Adam, not the old lady I passed in aisle two or the perky high schooler who waved at me from aisle five.

Me.

It's a personal thing.

I didn't get to tell Liam, the doctor announced it, so I will make damn sure I was the one to tell Adam.

If I'm pregnant.

Which I'm not.

"Addison," a familiar voice says from behind me.

"Hello, Mrs. Warren."

"How are you, dear? Settling in okay?"

"Yes, ma'am."

Her eyes dart down to the box in my hands, and she smiles a knowing smile. "Anything you care to share with me?"

As much as I love Chloe's mom, I'm not about to open up to her in the middle of the pharmacy about what may or may not be true.

"No, but Chloe might have some news to share with you later," I say, placing my box on the counter for the clerk to scan.

Her eyes light up in delight as I pay and slide out the front door with a wave. I know what I've done. Chloe is going to kill me, but it's better than the alternative. At least Chloe and Wyatt are in the process of planning their wedding.

Me?

I'd prefer not to be labeled as an unwed mother. Again.

It wasn't fun the first time, and I can't imagine I'd enjoy it this time around.

As soon as I'm back in the car, I tell Chloe about her mom. She doesn't seem as upset as I thought she might be. The long-standing feud she had with her parents has finally ended. Chloe has taken complete control of her life back, and I have a feeling what her mother thinks doesn't really matter to her anymore.

As soon as we get to the bar, I beeline it for the bathrooms. I've had to pee since we left my house and I'm not going to be able to hold it any longer. Not to mention I'm nervous, which makes it ten times worse.

Ripping open the package, I uncap the little stick and read the directions. You'd think at twenty-seven years old I would know how to do this, but I don't. Especially since it seems fairly easy.

Start peeing. Put the stick in the urine stream. Pull it out and wait three minutes.

Idiot proof.

I can hear Chloe pacing outside the stall as I wait for the test to give me my results. Watching the clock on my phone, I flip it over at exactly three minutes and almost drop it on the floor when I read my fate.

Pregnant.

Opening the stall door, the test in my hands, I look at Chloe and hold back the tears that are threatening to fall.

"It's going to be all right," she says.

"Are you sure? I'm not ready for this, and Adam… oh my god. What am I going to tell him? He's going to freak out."
