Not a bad idea. As long as I can keep her from seeing it or…

"I like that idea. Bedding it is," I declare, clapping my hands together in excitement.

Ten minutes later, my mom, Chloe, and I are on our way to the store. My mother was overly enthusiastic to see me, rubbing her hands all over my belly and talking to the baby in the middle of the airport. You would never know it's been six years since we last saw each other. Or the fact that we fought hours before I left. That there was an entire six months before I spoke to her again.

All that has been forgotten apparently, or she's taken acting classes recently.

"I need to go pick out your gift," I say to Chloe as we browse the clothing racks, my mother with her arms getting fuller by the moment.

"Okay, your mom and I will be browsing. Text me when you're ready to go."

Nodding, we share a look, and she smiles, assuring me that she'll be just fine alone with my mom, before I walk toward the back of the store in search of crib bedding.

I'm presented with more than a dozen options for each sex. My plan is to buy one of each. That way if Chloe tries to sneak a peek at what I've purchased, she won't ruin the gender reveal. I decide to go with the blue and gray bedding with anchors on it for a little boy and a soft pink and yellow bedding with butterflies if they have another little girl. I think Chloe will approve of both.

Now to purchase them both and put them in the trunk of the car without being seen. Watching for Chloe as I head to the register, I hear her and my mother talking as I pass by, causing me to stop in my tracks.

"They love each other, Kiersten. Getting married has nothing to do with Addy being pregnant. I swear," Chloe states firmly. I can hear the agitation in her voice, something my mother must be oblivious to because she asks for her reassurance again, and Chloe repeats herself.

I wonder how long this conversation has been going around and around. I set the bedding packs out of site and step into the aisle, clearing my throat.

"There you are, honey. Are you finished already? I still have a few things I want to get—"

"Stop it, Mom. Stop harassing Chloe. Stop fishing for answers to questions you have no right to ask. You promised you would be on your best behavior this trip. I'm not in the mood to fight with you, and if that's why you came, I can drop you off at the airport on our way out of town."

"Addison, I swear it's not like that," she protests.

"Then why are you badgering Chloe for information? If you want to know something, ask me. Hell, ask Adam. Leave my friends out of it."

My mother clamps her mouth shut and turns her attention to the bottle brushes on the wall. I mouth "I'm sorry" to Chloe, but she only smiles. For some reason, she likes it when I get feisty. She finds it amusing. Well, she's about to see just how fired up I can get. My mother tends to bring it out in me.
