Mother-in-law from Hell

Meetingthe parents for the first time is always nerve-racking. When I first met Adam's mother, I was a mess for days leading up to it. I was afraid she wouldn't approve of me and that Adam would break up with me. My fears consumed my thoughts to the point I chewed off all my nails, and I've never been a nail biter a day in my life.

Adam laughed when I told him I was nervous. Actually threw his head back and burst into laughter. There may have even been tears in his eyes, but I was too furious to notice. It wasn't until I met Karen that I realized how much Adam was like her.

She's the sweetest woman you'll ever meet. Kind and caring. Funny as hell. A lot like Willy, Adam's dad.

They both welcomed me into the family without thinking twice about it. Even Sarah, Adam's sister, was nice to me the first time we met.

As much as I expected them to be protective of Adam, of his heart, they were the exact opposite. Maybe they could sense how much I loved him then, or how much he loved me, and knew it was in good hands. Chloe seems to think it’s more about the person he's become since meeting me.

I've helped him heal. He was on his way, but I was the missing piece that helped put him back together after Sawyer. I don't know whether to feel honored or sad about it.

So meeting Adam's family was a piece of cake. They're great. In fact, we try to see them as much as possible, and now that the house is in one piece again (for the most part), we're in the midst of planning a huge family dinner. I was going to aim for when my mom was in town, but after yesterday, I reconsidered.

Yesterday was… unacceptable behavior by my mother. As a parent and as a person.

Adam met us at the door, took the bags from our hands, and introduced himself to my mother. She pulled him in for a hug and sounded genuinely excited to meet him.

So far, so good, right?

Wrong.

Her demeanor changed the moment their embrace was over. She went from "hi, it's nice to finally meet you" to "you think marrying my daughter is the best idea just because you knocked her up" in the blink of an eye.

My jaw hit the floor. Adam, on the other hand, maintained his composure.

He calmly described everything he loved about me. Attempted to put her mind at ease about why he wanted to marry me. He never mentioned the baby as a reason, and a smile never left his face as he defended himself and our relationship even though he didn't have to.

Because of all that, I've dubbed Adam a fucking saint. That's the best way to describe him.

My mother is a force sometimes, and he's taking her visit in stride. In fact, I'd say he's handling her better than I am.

I flipped out on her the moment we were alone for bombarding him. Then again this morning when she was critical of the new kitchen Adam and Wyatt worked so hard on.

She's lucky we're in public right now, or I would probably flip my shit again. She's giving Adam parenting advice. Again, he's smiling at her and nodding his head politely. I'm watching it from across the Warren's backyard while I wait for Bev to gather everyone's attention.

It's almost gender reveal time. I'm nervous and excited. I'm also a little pissy because I don't get to have a party like this to find out what we're having.

"Okay, everyone. If you could please crowd around the front table, we're going to get started," Mr. Warren yells.

The small crowd of family and friends begin to move toward the table. Adam and I make eye contact as my mother loops her arm with his and begins pulling him across the lawn. He needs a break. I can see it. He's practically begging me, and I can't blame him.

Stepping in their path, Adam pulls them to a stop, but my mother keeps talking.

"Hey, Mom. I thought you and I could watch from over here so Adam could help Wyatt."

"Help him with what?" She practically spits the words at me.

"Does it really matter?" I mutter, gripping her upper arm and pulling her away.

"That was rude, Addison. I was having a chat with your boyfriend."

"Fiancé," I correct her for the seventh time today.

She continues to berate me, but I block her out, moving through the crowd and dragging her behind me. When we reach the clearing, Bev calls me to the front and I join Chloe on her end of the table. Adam is standing next to Wyatt with a sinister grin on his face.
