There's a smug grin on her face. The urge to smack it off of her is strong. In fact…

Adam's arm wraps around my waist, and he whispers in my ear, stopping me from attacking her.

"Don't let her win, babe. That's what she wants. I'm not sure what she's trying to pull, but he's asking to speak to you. I refused to let him in, so he's outside on the porch waiting. Want me to tell him to go away?"

Yes.

No.

It's been six years since the last time I laid eyes on him. He's a part of my past, and nothing he has to say will change that. I can handle talking to him. We were friends before anything else.

"Why?" My eyes are locked on my mother's. There's no confusion as to who I was directing my question to.

"It's obvious you aren't over him, Addison. I thought maybe you just needed to reconnect."

Balling my hands into fists, Adam tightens his grip on me.

"Let me make this as clear as I can for you, mother. I'm over Liam. He's a part of my past. Adam is my future. We're getting married. We're having a baby. If you can't accept that, you're not welcome here anymore."

"Are you sure this is what you want?" she challenges. "You don't look at him the way you looked at Liam."

"You're right. I don't. Want to know why? I don't think I was ever in love with Liam. I think it was lust confused as love. We were young. We had fun together. We weren't meant to be together, though, and the sooner you accept that, the better."

My mother, for the hundredth time today, rolls her eyes. It breaks me. I tried to be nice, but it puts me over the edge. Adam must know she's pushed the explode button, too, because he releases his grip on me.

Three giant steps and I'm in her face. I'm ready to unleash hell on her when my phone rings on the counter next to me. Ignoring it, I stare at my mother. The look on her face is daring me to say anything. She's not scared of me, but she should be.

"Addy," Adam calls.

"Yeah?" I ask, not bothering to turn around.

"Babe," he says, the change in his tone sending a twinge of pain to my heart. Somethings wrong.

Turning, he's holding up his phone. I can't read it from here, but the look on his face tells me all I need to know.

"Let's go," I say, snagging my phone off the counter.

"They just got to the hospital," Adam says as he hands me my purse. "She needs her bag from the house. Her water broke on the way over here."

Nodding, I begin formulating a plan in my head.

"I've got this," Haley says from behind me.

I'd almost forgotten she was here. I was so consumed with my hatred for my mother, everyone else faded into the background.

"Thanks. I'm not sure how long we'll be."

"Let me know if you need anything. I can always come pick up Lola if they want me to."

Reaching for the door handle, Adam places his hand on mine. "He's still out there. You're going to have to face him. What do you want to do?"

"I'm not going to be a prisoner in my own home. If he wants to talk to me, he can wait until I'm ready. Right now, all I care about is getting to the hospital and being there for Chloe."

Keeping my eyes trained on the car, I walk past Liam and down the steps. I hear Adam say something to him in a hushed voice, and then he's behind me again, opening my door for me and helping me in. When I glance back at the porch, Liam's not standing there anymore.

"Where'd he go?" I ask as Adam backs out of the driveway.

"Inside. I told him he could wait here but that when he leaves, he needs to take your mother with him. I love you, Addison, but I have no idea how you are even related to her."
