Forty-Five & Single

He's still here.

Every morning I wake up and assume I'll find him packing his bag, ready to head back to Fairview and forget all about me.

Our "fun" will be over.

If I'm being honest with myself, things were never just fun between us. We crossed that line before he came here. We've sprinted so far past it now I can't even remember what the line looks like.

The past week has been a blur.

Adam cooks, cleans, and has even started looking for a job here in Denver. It was never a question of if I wanted him to stay, it just sort of happened. One minute, we were talking about grocery shopping to pick up provisions since we'd bled my cupboards dry, and the next, he was searching for a part-time gig here in the city.

I mentioned it to Chloe, and she laughed.

"What the hell is so funny?"

"You two."

"What do you mean?" I ask, keeping my voice low so Adam doesn't hear us. He's in the kitchen, cooking dinner for the three of us. Again.

Chloe packed her kitchen a few days ago and has been coming over for dinner every night since. Not that I mind. With her leaving in a few days, it's nice to be able to spend time with her. Things will be different once she's gone. I won't be able to barge into her apartment and complain about my day or gush about the cute thing that Adam said or did.

Sure, I can call her.

We'll Facetime. Text. Even visit as often as we can.

It'll still be an adjustment. Even Chloe knows it. She's been joking about me making an impression on my new neighbors the first time I forget she doesn't live there anymore and burst through their door.

Let's hope, for their sake, they keep it locked, unlike Chloe.

"Moving in together is a big step, that's all, and you two seem to make it sound like no big deal. The other day you're trying to convince me you're not in love with him, and then suddenly he's here with no plans of leaving."

My gut instinct is to defend my action, but there's no point. She's right. We're moving at warp speed, afraid to be apart for more than a few hours. We need to have a talk, Adam and I. Before things become more permanent.

"Don't let your fears hold you back, Addy. If nothing else, learn from my mistakes."

Pulling Chloe in for a hug, I sigh. "What am I going to do without you here to keep me grounded?"

"You'll be fine. You survived before you met me."

If she only knew what surviving looked like back then. It wasn’t pretty. In fact, there was nothing glamorous about my life before moving to Denver. At least not the parts that tend to stick out in my memory.

"By the way," she begins, pulling away and holding me at arm’s length. "What did your boss want?"

My boss.

Ms. June Haskin.

One of the greatest minds I've ever worked with.

She hired me five years ago.

She's the reason I sit on the board of directors.

Why? Because she believes in me. She was offered the spot and passed it on to me.
