"I don't know yet. I can't just quit my job, and I can't ask Adam to stay here. His life is in Fairview. It wouldn't be fair to ask him to give that up."

"Wyatt might kill you if you did," she mutters.

"Yeah, I kind of figured he's mad at Adam. He's called a few times and been sent to voicemail. I think Adam's afraid to answer."

"From our brief conversations, it sounds like he's covering for Adam on top of everything else right now."

"Then he needs to go back home," I say, letting out a sigh.

"Don't I get to make that decision?" Adam asks, stepping into the living room at the most inopportune moment.

"Of course you do," I quickly reply, hoping he can hear the sincerity in my voice.

"Good, because I have no plans to go back unless you're coming back with me. I don't see that happening, so maybe it's time to call Wyatt and let him know."

Standing, Chloe slowly backs out of the room. "I'm going to let you two work it out. I'll see you tomorrow. Call me if you need me."

"What about dinner?" I call after her, but she doesn't answer.

Taking the seat next to me, Adam lifts my chin so I'm looking at him. "What's going on?"

"Nothing. I just had a meeting with my boss today, and she got me thinking."

"About?"

"Us."

"What about us? Did you tell her how great the sex was? That's the first thing I tell everyone."

Smiling because, let’s be honest, it was funny, I shake my head. "No. She seems to think I need to figure out what this is before I lose you."

"Okay, so let's talk, then."

Releasing my chin, Adam shifts and slides next to me on the couch, putting his arm around my shoulder. We sit in silence for a few minutes until he finally clears his throat.

"I guess I'll start," he says. "Addison, I'm not sure when it happened, but I've fallen in love with you. I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't kick me out because I'm not sure how I survived before you, but I'm certain I won't survive without you from now on. How do you feel?"

Casual.

Nonchalant.

As if it was a normal, everyday conversation.

Adam said the three most important words you can say to another person, and it sounded as natural as if he'd said them a million times before. And then he tosses in a joke for good measure because he can't not when the conversation is this serious.

Now he wants to know how I feel. How do I even compete with that?

"I, um, I don't want you to leave. I don't want you to feel like you have to stay either."

"So you don't love me?"

Shit. I forgot to say that part. He's got me all flustered. I should have led with "I love you too," but I didn't.

"There's no doubt in my mind that I'm madly in love with you," I say, turning my body so that it's facing him. "You know that already, though. Actions speak louder than words."

"If you're referring to what we did last night—"

"No, I'm not. It's the little things. The way you hold my hand, the way you protect me when we cross the street… that's how I can tell you love me. I can feel it."
