"I'm going to grab a coffee. Want anything?"

Liam's been pacing the room since I came back from getting a few tests run. The last thing he needs is coffee right now, but I'm not going to argue with him. We've been here for close to two hours and still don't have answers.

The uncertainty is wearing us both down.

"No thanks."

"I'll be right back," he says before stepping out into the hall.

Leaning back against the lumpy pillow, I shift until I'm more comfortable and close my eyes.

They're there. The men who did this to me.

I've given my statement to the police, and they're searching for them, but the chances of catching them are slim. If they pawn my ring, we may have a better chance, but still, they made no promises.

A shuffling sound prompts me to crack open one eye. Standing at the end of my bed is a middle-aged man dressed in blue scrubs and a white lab coat.

"Ms. Larken, I'm Dr. Ralsteen."

Shaking the doctor’s hand, he pulls up a chair next to my bed and leans forward.

"I'm happy to report that most of your injuries are minor. Your face will heal in a few weeks, and as it does, the pain will subside."

"Can you prescribe me something for the pain in the meantime? It's like a constant throbbing in my ear."

Ignoring my request, he continues.

"The bleeding was a result of the blunt force trauma you experienced to your abdomen, specifically to your cervix. Right now, there's no need to be alarmed. I would like to do an ultrasound so we can get take a look at the baby, though."

Baby.

What baby?

“I'm not pregnant.”

"I'm sorry. I assumed you knew already."

I said that out loud. You've got to be kidding me. As if today could get any worse.

"No, I didn't." Sitting up straighter, I suck in a deep breath and let it out slowly.

If this is what life is going to throw at me right now, I'm going to face it head on and deal with it. I can break down later. When I'm alone. In the safety of my own home.

"Would you like to wait for the father to return before we begin?" he asks, reaching for a monitor on wheels and pulling it to the side of the bed.

"Father?" Liam asks from just inside the door.

"Dr. Ralsteen," the doctor says, moving to stand when Liam steps up to my side.

"Addison? You're pregnant?"

Ignoring the doctor, Liam turns to me. The fear in his eyes masks my own. We're not ready for this. This isn't what we planned. We haven't even talked about getting married yet. Sure, it seems like the next step in our relationship, but neither of us has brought it up.

We both have a few months before we graduate.

Liam's already interviewing for jobs. Some of the most prestigious law firms in the area are seeking him out. They want to bring him on board. He’ll be working late nights and weekends until he settles in.

A baby is not what we need right now.
