Evie

He's back on campus, and I still haven't found a way to leave without being noticed. Finn and Lo took off an hour ago. My mom went shopping early this morning with Mrs. Graham. Max has been following me around the house all day.

In order to sneak a text to Leo, I had to go in the bathroom, and even then Max was waiting on the other side of the door when I emerged.

ME: Max has gone crazy. I'm afraid to even look at my phone without him seeing I'm texting you. I'm going to try to get back to campus today if I can.

"You're acting strange." He keeps saying this, and I keep giving him the same response.

"You would be too if someone was following you around all day. I can't even go pee by myself."

"It's not like I was in the bathroom with you."

"Why in the hell are you shadowing me, Max?"

"Because you're acting strange. Something's up, and I want to know what it is."

"The only thing up right now is my level of annoyance with you. You know what," I state, deciding then and there that I am done playing this game with him. This is as good of a reason as any to leave. "I'm going back to campus."

"Why?"

"To get away from you."

"What are you hiding, Evie?"

Lots of things. All of which he'll find out tomorrow and not a moment sooner.

"Even if I am hiding something—which I'm not saying I am—what makes you think I would tell you? Because you asked? Oh, I'm sorry, because you accused me? That's not how this works, Max. If I wanted to tell you something, I would tell you. I'm not obligated to tell you shit."

Max smirks at me as I storm past him and down the hall to my childhood bedroom. It's only been a few months since I left, yet it feels smaller, looks different even though everything is exactly the way I left it.

I'm throwing things in my overnight bag when I hear Max knock on my open door. "Can I come in?"

"You're not a vampire, Max. You don't have to wait for an invitation."

"Ha, ha. Listen, I'm not trying to be a prick—"

"Good to know, but you need to work on that."

"I'm saying I'm sorry, Evie. I know I can be overbearing sometimes."

"Sometimes? Max, you crossed the line of overbearing when you listened to me pee this afternoon. Twice!"

The first time, I didn't know he was out there. I sent Leo a text, flushed, and then washed my hands to make it appear real. Had I known he was on the other side of the door, I would have forced myself to go. The second time, I ran the water to cover up the fact I wasn't actually peeing.

"You've just been acting strange."

"You keep saying that, but I don't think I have. You're the one who's been acting different."

"Of course you don't see it. Evie, you were so excited to come to LSU. You talked about it all summer. You swore you were going to be at every frat party and event. You wanted to have the traditional, crazy freshman experience."

"I can't do that if I'm banned from the house."

"It was one party!"

"No, Max," I state, remaining calm even though I can feel the blood rushing through my veins, heated in anger. "You banned me from the house because you didn't want me to talk to one person. Because you didn't want me to get involved with him. This is about you, not me. You do what you want without consideration to anyone else's feelings. You make decisions for me without asking me what I want. You're acting like my father instead of my brother."

Max's head whips to the side like he's been slapped physically instead of verbally.
