His eyes flick up and meet Evie’s, but he doesn't say anything.

Honestly, he doesn't have to. The look on his face, as if Evie is about to oust him in front of all his friends, is apparent. His eyes are pleading with her to keep her mouth shut. It makes me wonder if she knows something I don't. Not that it's any of my business.

The same way our relationship isn't any of his. Because it's not about him.

"Maxy, I love you. You know that. You're the best big brother a girl could ask for—"

"I second that," Lo hollers.

"But you can't protect me from everything. You can't shelter me from the reality of life."

"I can try."

Reaching out and taking Max's hand, Evie gives it a little squeeze. "And I love you for trying, but I need you to let me figure this out on my own. If he hurts me, you'll be the one I run to. But right now, he makes me happy."

Max's gaze lands on me. Standing tall, I try to look unaffected by his stare. When he takes a step in my direction, I fight the shudder that runs up my spine. And when he stops in front of me, my breathing already shallow, I suck in a deep breath and wait for the hit to come.

Only it doesn't.
