Scarlet

“Hey,girl. What are you doing here?” Mya asks as I drop into the seat across from her.

“Timmy lives around the corner. I broke up with him, and now I’m waiting for an Uber to pick me up and take me back to the house.”

She doesn’t seem shocked by my announcement. If I’m being honest, I’m not shocked by it either. I think I knew it was coming. Even before I caught him cheating. We weren’t the same couple that started dating last year. We hadn’t been in a long time.

“About time,” she remarks, taking a sip of her coffee.

“What?”

“You’ve always been so much better than him. He didn’t deserve you. You don’t see it right now, but you’ve been holding your relationship together for a long time. I know he probably tried to talk his way out of what happened last month, but I have a feeling that wasn’t the first time he cheated on you. People talk, Scar, and she’s a Chi sister. They’re not exactly known for keeping their mouths shut.”

Or their legs.

“You think that wasn’t the first time?”

The thought had crossed my mind before, but I brushed it off. I wanted to believe him, even if I knew in my heart he was lying.

“I think Timmy ruined the best thing he ever had.”

“But you said—”

“I also think he’s not very smart. Only cares about himself. If she was bragging about him three months ago, there’s a chance they’ve been sneaking around for a while.”

All I can do is nod as my phone vibrates in my hand, alerting me to my waiting ride.

“I’m not saying any of this to hurt you, Scarlet. I’m telling you because I think you deserve to be treated better. When was the last time he attended an event with you? Took you on a real date? Gave you an orgasm?”

Thankfully, Mya whispers her last question as I stand, pocketing my phone.

“A long time,” I confess.

“Find someone who cares about those things. Who would do anything to make you smile. Who is proud to be with you. He’s out there; I promise. You just have to open your eyes, and your heart, to the possibility.”

“And what makes you such an expert on romance these days? Could it have anything to do with the sexy bad-boy I found in your room?”

Mya’s smile grows as she looks past me. Following her gaze, I find Brady leaning against the counter, watching her as he waits for his order.

“I think I have my answer.”

Waving to both of them as I leave, I roll Mya’s words around the entire ride back to the Zeta house.

Timmy and I had grown apart.

Or rather, I’d grown up, and he’d remained a selfish boy. One who only cares about his wants and needs. What’s best for him.

I thought he’d change over time. That after being together for a while, he’d put us first. Let go of his bachelor ways.

But I couldn’t have been more wrong. And the more I think about it, the more I think he went in the opposite direction. Pushing me away. Lying. Cheating…

As I sit here, thinking back on the last fifteen months, I have a clear vision of our relationship for what it really was. We led separate lives except when it came to sex. He always made time for that.

Until recently. That should have been my first clue that things were falling apart.

My second?

He ran out of condoms. That’s never happened before. He’s always made sure to have at least one on him. And when he didn’t and asked me to buy some on my way to his place, I freaked out.
