“Something like that.” Waving her hand through the air, Mya dismisses the question before changing the subject. “Anyway, he should be back to get me in a few minutes. Are you sure you want to stay alone tonight? You’re more than welcome to come stay with us.”

“That’s okay. The last thing I need is to hear the two of you going at it while I’m trying to sleep. It’s going to be hard enough that every time I move my leg, my ankle throbs.”

“What if I promise we won’t have sex tonight? Will you come back to Brady’s with us then?”

I raise my eyebrow at Mya before shaking my head. “You can’t promise me that, and you know it. Plus, I want to leave as early as I can tomorrow. Traffic on a Saturday is going to suck, especially this close to the holidays.”

After promising to call if I need anything, no matter what time it is, Mya finally heads downstairs to wait for Brady. I hear the front door open followed by the murmur of voices. Once I’m sure Mya’s left, I carefully maneuver to my side and close my eyes. The throbbing in my ankle has subsided slightly, but I can still feel the dull pulsating as I try to even out my breathing and fall asleep. I’m emotionally exhausted from today.

I want to blame Timmy, but I can’t. Walking away from him felt like a weight was lifted off my chest.

It’s everything else that happened that has my mind refusing to shut down. The way Colt looked as he crossed the rec center. The way his lips felt as they crashed against mine. The feel of his hands on my body. The way I reacted to him, as if I couldn’t get enough yet I was overwhelmed.

I’ve always felt that way around him.

Overwhelmed and out of control.

Then he showed up here only to run.

Pushing thoughts of the man I’ll never have from my mind, I’m almost asleep when I hear footsteps in the hall.

Did Mya decide to stay here tonight?

When I crack open my eyes, there’s a large figure standing in my doorway. Forgetting about my ankle, I hop out of bed in search of something to defend myself with and fall flat on my face, my ankle crumpling beneath me, unable to hold my weight.

“Jesus, Scarlet. What the hell are you doing?”

Me? What am I doing? What the hell is he doing here? And why didn’t he announce himself?

“You scared the shit out of me, Colt. I thought you left.” Pushing myself to a sitting position, I rest my back against my bed and stretch my legs out in front of me.

“I did.”

“Then what are you doing here?” He still hasn’t moved from the doorway. His large body is blocking the little bit of light filtering up the stairs and down the hall from the kitchen.

“Feeling like an asshole for scaring you.”

“You could have announced your arrival. Called out my name. Something other than stand in my doorway like a creepy stalker so I know it’s you and not some stranger here to kill me. Especially since I’m all alone in this huge house. Campus is mostly empty. It’s the perfect time for someone to break in and—”

“I’m sorry.”

Taking a deep breath, I let it out slowly. I feel my anxiety rising as I think about scenario after scenario of who he could have been.

“What are you doing here?” I echo as he inches his way into my room, kneeling in front of my outstretched legs. He doesn’t answer me right away, lifting my injured ankle and placing it in his lap as he takes a seat on the floor.

“I came to check on you.”

“Mya just left.” Averting my gaze even though he can’t see my eyes, I stare at where my foot is resting, the heat radiating off his body warming my skin.

“I know.”

“I’m fine. You can go now.”

“I’m sorry.” His words are barely above a whisper as he runs his hand up my leg, stopping just short of the juncture between my thighs.

“You’ve already said that.”

“I’m sorry I ran,” he clarifies, reaching for my hand and threading his fingers through mine.
