This has to stop. Whatever he’s doing, for whatever reason, can’t be good. Since Scarlet won’t talk about it, and Kane refuses to talk to Cleo for me, I’m going to give it a go with Max again. See if I can get anything out of him.

Leaning in close, I kiss Scarlet on the cheek and whisper in her ear.

“Take Gia to the bar for a drink. I need to talk to the guys really quick.”

Without hesitation, Scarlet takes Gia’s available hand and pulls her away. My eyes track her until she reaches the bar. When I look back, my gaze lands on Max who looks like he’s planning his escape.

“What’s going on?”

“What do you mean?” he asks, attempting to appear indifferent to my question as he leans against the wall.

Sharing a look with Kane, we box Max in so he can’t run.

“What are you doing with Gia?”

“What does it look like? We’re dating. If you have a problem with that—”

Max stands to his full height, attempting to intimidate us, and fails miserably. Kane is hunched over laughing, holding his stomach while I do everything I can not to do the same.

The difference between me and Kane … I know the truth. Not that I’ll out Max. Not yet anyway.

“Dating?” I ask as Kane regains his composure. “That’s what you call dating? I’ve seen more fireworks between you and Cleo, and you can’t stand that girl.”

Max opens his mouth to argue with me, but I cut him off.

“Whatever happened between you two, or maybe, whatever didn’t happen,” I starts, wiggling my eyebrows, “gets you harder than what’s going on between you and Gia. So fess up because your bullshit explanations aren’t going to work anymore.”

Max glares at us for a few long beats before saying anything. When he does, I don’t know whether to be surprised or relieved by his honest confession.

“Why?” That’s all I want to know.

Why in the hell is he pretending to date Gia?

“That’s none of your damn business. I know you girls like to talk, and I’m not about to start spilling my secrets just so you can share them with the rest of the house. Screw that. A man needs a little privacy.”

“You can tell me anything, Maxy,” Kane says, his voice rising higher than I’ve ever heard it before as he bats his eyelashes at Max.

“Call me that again and I’m going to punch you in your dick.” Max’s jaw is clenched tight as he growls at Kane.

“But, Maxxyyy…” Kane says, jumping back when Max swings at him.

“Alright, you two. Knock that shit off. There have been enough fights at our shows lately. I don’t need to see the two of you trading punches while I entertain the crowd. Which it’s time for me to do again.”

“Already?” I hear Scarlet ask as she slides her arm around my waist.

“Sorry, baby. I have to get back up there or I’m never going to leave this hellhole tonight.”

I’ve already been here too long. The smell of stale beer and piss has worn off. I don’t even notice it, yet I know it’s still wafting around in the air.

“In that case, get your ass up there so we can go.” Scarlet spanks my butt before popping up on her tiptoes and pressing her lips to mine.

As I’m walking away, I hear her voice over the murmur of the crowd and almost trip over my own feet.

“So, Kane. Cleo needs a date for the gala.”

Good luck with that. I have no doubt Kane won’t be going to the gala. Or, at the very least, he will go alone. In fact, he’ll probably show up in an outrageous tux that will no doubt stand out and piss Cleo off.

Maybe something baby blue. Purple. Ooh … plaid!
