Scarlet’s body begins to shake, so I tighten my grip on her. It takes me a second to realize she’s laughing.

“You’re something else, you know that?” she asks as she sucks in deep breaths, attempting to control her laughter. Pushing out of my arms, she stands in front of me, forcing me to look at her. “My father is not going to approve of anyone I date, ever. I realized that when I brought my first and only boyfriend home at fifteen. We weren’t even really dating. I thought he was cute, I needed a ride home from school, and he offered. He held my hand the entire drive, and so I invited him inside to study.”

I scoff, not wanting to hear about her and another guy.

“Keep your mind out of the gutter, caveman. Nothing happened between us, and nothing was going to happen. He was there for ten minutes before my father came storming in. The doorman must have called him to let him know I’d brought afriendhome. He was irate, but he hid it well to the untrained eye. He forbid me to see him ever again. The funny thing is, he was a perfect match to what my father wanted for me; he just didn’t know it.”

“How so?”

“The right upbringing. Rich family. Social status. Intelligent. He was going places.”

“That’s what your dad was looking for in your boyfriends?”

“Yup,” she says, popping the P for emphasis. “He still does.”

“Well, I’m screwed.”

“I didn’t say that’s whatIwas looking for.”

Placing my hands on her hips, I pull Scarlet in close, tilting her chin up so I can still look into her eyes. “What are you looking for?”

“Someone who makes me laugh and smile. Who appreciates me. Who respects me. He has to challenge me and support me. He’s strong but sensitive. Compassionate. Charming. Mostly, I want a man whose love I can feel even when he’s not in the same room.”

Jesus, this woman is amazing. The entire package. And she’s in my arms.
