Scarlet

When I barreled backinto the gala in search of Colt, it was to try to stop him from witnessing the scene I just had in the back of the limo.

Cleo, with her dress around her waist, her head thrown back, clinging to Kane as she bounced on top of his lap.

Kane, his grip on Cleo’s hips, guiding her body, as he thrust upward.

Over and over again.

Until his eyes met mine.

They’re a nice shade of amber brown. I had no idea. I’d never seen Kane without his sunglasses on before. They suit him. Even when they’re filled with panic.

The last thing I thought I would find when I walked back into the room was my father and Colt seated at a table, having what appeared to be a civil discussion. Though, the closer I got to where they were, the better I was able to see my father’s face. Which meant I could see the anger in his eyes, the tension in his shoulders, and I knew Colt was oblivious to it all.

If he wasn’t, he’s the bravest man I know. He didn’t stop talking. He didn’t back down. He stood up for me, to my father.

I fell a little more in love with Colt in that moment.

I’ve been trying to stop myself from falling too hard, too fast, but it feels like it’s already happened. It could have happened the first time we kissed. I might have loved him before he walked into the rec center to meet with me that day a few months ago. If nothing else, I know I let myself fall at least a little on New Year’s Eve.

When he sang my song.

When he declared, in front of all our friends, in front of strangers, the way he felt about me the first time he saw me.

The way he still feels about me.

The love he held onto all these years. The hope. The desire.

It was all told through the song. In less than four minutes. One chorus.

“Scarlet,” Colt says, squeezing my hips to get my attention. “Where’d you go?”

“I was thinking about you.”

“What about me?” he asks, leaning close to my ear.

“How you’re perfect for me. How I’m glad we found our way back to each other.”

“Remind me to thank Cleo later.”

Cleo.

Shit! I still have to tell him about that. And it’s not going to be easy considering the person he wants to thank was riding his best friend.

“About Cleo…” I let my voice trail off as he kisses his way down the side of my neck.

“We can talk about her later. There are things I’d like to do to you that don’t involve her.” His words vibrate against my skin as his lips skim across my collarbone.

I don’t want to talk about her, or what I saw, but I know I have to. Especially since when he tilts my head to the side and I look behind him, I spot Cleo walking in our direction.

“Speak of the devil,” I mutter, pulling out of Colt’s embrace. He shifts so he’s standing next to me just as Cleo approaches, Kane hot on her heels. His sunglasses are perched on his nose, slightly crooked, his expression unreadable.

“Can I talk to you for a minute?” she asks, breezing past me without even acknowledging Colt.

“What am I missing?” Colt asks, his attention directed at Kane who’s now standing in front of us.

“I’m going to go talk to her. I’ll be right back.”
