I gather her hands in mine. “I know you’re the most stubborn person I will ever meet. I know you love your family and this town with a fierceness I can’t wait for you to show to our daughter.”

“Son.”

I ignore her interruption. She only said son to be contrary.

“I know you’re the hardest working person I’ve ever met, which is saying a lot since I was raised by a single mom. I know you shiver whenever I touch you. And, I know you feel this connection to me, too.”

She opens her mouth, but I keep talking. “I also know you’re going to deny it.” She pouts at my pronouncement.

“I don’t want to be an absent father who sees my kid once a month and every other Christmas. I want to be there every night. Go to her ballet recitals.”

“Football games.”

“Those too. She can do whatever she wants,” I deliberately misinterpret her words.

“What does all this mean?”

I cup her chin and meet her gaze. “It means I’m not going anywhere. It means I want to be in a relationship with you on top of co-parenting our child. A romantic relationship.”

She bites her lip. I want to be the one biting her lip, but I wait to hear what her response to my announcement is. I haven’t made a secret of my desire to move our relationship forward romantically, but since she told me of her past, I finally understand why she’s reluctant. She’s not merely being stubborn. She’s scared and I don’t want to spook her.

“You can’t quit your job. I won’t let you.”

“But I don’t want you to worry about my leaving. I want you to know I’m here to stay.”

“And I don’t want you to look back on your life and regret me and our child.”

I nod. I can understand her concerns. “Which leaves us with what choice?”

She takes a deep breath and straightens her back. “You’re here for two years working on the community center, aren’t you?”

“Mostly,” I say because I want to be completely open and honest with her. Any slight misunderstanding will break her trust. And I will have her trust. “I’ll have to return to Chicago periodically but never longer than for a few days at a time.”

“How about this? We see where this thing between us goes for the next two years. A few months before you’re due to depart, we sit down and discuss what we both want. In the meantime, you definitely don’t quit your job.”

I love this idea, but it doesn’t prove to her how serious I am. How I won’t leave her behind and how I definitely won’t cheat on her. I guess I’ll have to earn her trust over the next two years.

“Okay. I agree to your conditions. And I promise I will always be honest with you. In the meantime …”

I feather kisses along her lips until she moans. Then, I dive into her mouth. I will never get enough of her. Her taste. Her sounds. Her smell. I want it all. I gather her in my arms and set her on my lap until she’s straddling me. She rocks against my cock, and I dig my hands into her hips to keep her right where she is.

Ding dong. Ding dong.

The doorbell rings and I wrench my mouth away from hers to snarl at the door. Ellie giggles.

“I guess the pizza’s here.”

I set her on her feet. “To be continued,” I promise before stalking to the door.
