Chapter 28

Cleaning mirrors is a job I can really see myself doing.

Ifreeze with my hand on the door to enter my parent’s house for Sunday dinner. I drop my hand and step back slamming into Cole’s hard body.

He squeezes my shoulders. “Don’t worry.”

Don’t worry? Is he out of his mind? Of course, I’m worried. I’ve never brought a man home. My mom’s not stupid. She knows I’ve had boyfriends before but bring them home with me? No way.

“Seriously. There’s nothing to worry about. Your mom loves me. All moms do.”

I whirl around to confront him. “What? How many moms have you met? Are you a serial dater?”

“Serial dater? Is that a thing?”

I wag my finger at him. “Don’t be funny. I’m serious. How many moms have you met?”

“I’ve met a lot of moms.”

I groan and bury my face in my hands. “My first boyfriend in a decade and it turns out he’s a man whore.”

He chuckles as he pulls my hands away from my face. “I am not a man whore. And I haven’t met a ton of moms of girlfriends, but I have met a ton of women who are moms.”

I slap his chest. “You were teasing me? When you know how nervous I am?”

“Thus the teasing to get your mind off your nervousness.”

“You’re trouble, Cole Hawkins.”

He wiggles his eyebrows. “The good kind, though. Such as last night when I—”

I cover his mouth with my hands. “Shush. Do you want everyone in Winter Falls to hear about our sex life?”

“I want to hear about your sex life,” Ashlyn shouts through the door.

I sigh. “Are you sure you want to live in Winter Falls?”

He shrugs. “You and the baby are here.”

Not the most convincing of answers, which is the reason I won’t let him quit his job. Until he falls in love with this town, he needs to keep his options open.

The door whips open. “Cole’s staying in Winter Falls?”

Lilac scoffs at Ashlyn’s question. “Of course, he’s staying. The community center project is practically a full-time job for the next two years.”

“Was everyone standing at the door listening to our conversation?”

“I was.” Juniper peeks her head out the doorway and waves.

“I wasn’t,” Aspen shouts from the living room.

“How did you hear my question if you weren’t eavesdropping?”

Before Aspen can respond, Ashlyn steps forward and nabs Cole’s hand dragging him into the house. “Ellery brought her special friend to dinner.”

At least, she’s not referring to Cole as my baby daddy anymore.

Mom rushes out of the kitchen, her face flushed and her hair a mess. Ashlyn groans. “Don’t tell me what you were doing in the kitchen. I don’t want to know.”
