I cross my arms over my chest. “Yeah, you did.” I motion to my sisters. “Ask any woman in here.”

Ashlyn, Aspen, and Lilac move to stand behind me. Ellery waves from the couch. “I’m metaphorically standing behind my sister. Pretend I can actually stand.”

“Shit,” he swears. “How do I fix this?”

I raise an eyebrow at him. “How can I ever trust you to not do the exact same thing again but with another woman?”

“Publicity stunts are part of the Hollywood life.”

His words feel like knives slicing into me; leaving my heart bloody and bruised. I knew he was a Hollywood star the first time he talked his way into my pants, but I – stupidly as it turns out – thought he was genuinely interested in me. Instead, he was playing me.

And he’s still trying to play me. Good luck. I know better now. This girl is done being played.

“Thanks for dinner, Mom.” I kiss her on the cheek. “I’m not feeling well. I’m going home.”

“Baby girl,” she mutters in response, but I hold up my hand before she can continue. I’m not interested in her platitudes about life always working out at this moment.

“Do you want me to kick his ass?” Dad asks and despite feeling as if my heart is being torn in two, I manage a smile for him.

“I think they’ll kick you out of the hippie club.”

Dad may be a stone cold lawyer, but he’s a hippie and a member of the non-violent club first and foremost.

“They won’t kick me out,” Lyric announces before snapping his fingers at Mav. “You. I think you’ve worn out your welcome.”

Mav raises his hands in surrender. “I can see myself out.”

“You don’t need to—” Mom starts, but Dad cuts her off.

“Yes, he does.”

Everyone watches as Mav saunters out of the house and shuts the door behind him.

Aspen winks at me. “We’ve got your back.”

I hope this means they’ll stop trying to matchmake me, but I won’t hold my breath. Aspen is on a mission to ensure all of her sisters are blissfully in love. Sorry, Aspen, not going to happen.

“Shall we eat?” Mom asks after an awkward silence falls.

“I’m not hungry,” I declare before making my way to the front door. “I should check on my animals anyway.”

I scurry out of the house as fast as I can. I don’t want to witness the pity on everyone’s faces. My love story is the same as theirs. Mine doesn’t end in an engagement ring or baby. No, mine ends in heartache.

I check which way Mav is walking before hopping on my bike and pedaling in the opposite direction. I rub my chest as I think of him abandoning Winter Falls and never coming back. Damn it. I won’t miss him. I refuse to miss the man who made it crystal clear where I stand on his priority list. Hint. It’s not very high.
