Chapter 23

If a dog is afraid of you, you have problems.

Maverick

Idump Juniper in my bathroom. “Get cleaned up. We’ll talk when you’re done.”

“Talk? We don’t have time. I need to get back to my sister’s party.” Her voice is reaching panic levels by the time she finishes.

I cock an eyebrow. “You do?”

She plants her hands on her hips and her breasts jut out. I force my gaze to remain above her neck. Now is not the time to act like a horny teenager, although being in Juniper’s presence makes me feel like one.

“It’s her wedding party. Of course, I do.”

I shake my phone at her. “I guess it wasn’t your sister who sent me this message telling me to – and I quote here – ‘don’t let Juniper escape’.”

“Returning to the party isn’t escaping,” she argues, but her shoulders fall forward in defeat.

I cup her chin in my hand. “Time’s up, June Bug.”

She straightens her shoulders. There’s my girl. Never down for long. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“I let you have your play. I gave you time to think. Time’s up.”

I don’t let her respond. I plant a hard kiss on her mouth before exiting the bathroom.

I dig around in my drawers and find a t-shirt and sweatpants that will fit her if she rolls up the bottom of the sweats. I wait until I hear the water in the shower flowing before entering the bathroom and placing the items on the vanity.

“I laid out clothes for you,” I tell her as I shut the door behind me.

I pace in the living room as I wait for her to clean up. I didn’t lie to Juniper. Her time is up. I gave her space to think about us. Whatever the hell space is supposed to mean. I have no idea what crawled up her ass. She was perfectly happy in my arms in the morning and the next thing I know she disappeared on me.

I hear the bedroom door open and bare feet pad toward me. When I glance Juniper’s way, I have to stop myself from rushing her. Her silky hair is wet and hangs down her back. The t-shirt I lent her is too small in the chest area and her perky breasts strain against the material. Something deeply possessive stirs to life in me at the sight of her in my clothes in my house.

I fist my hands and lock my knees before I say to hell with talking and herd her into my bedroom where I can worship every inch of her body. Later, I promise myself.

“May I return to Ashlyn and Rowan’s party now?” She grits out between clenched teeth.

“Hold up. Are you mad at me? I brought you here to clean up.”

“No. You carried me here against my will.”

“Against your will?” I growl. “I have never, nor will I ever, do anything to you or any other woman against their will.”

She sighs. “I’m sorry. You’re right. That was a shitty thing for me to say.”

I nod in acceptance of her apology.

“But I would like to return to the party.”

“After,” I tell her.

“After what? I’m no longer covered in cake and frosting. I can change into another outfit at my house. It’s not as if it matters what I’m wearing. Ashlyn’s throwing a wedding carnival for goodness sakes.”

“After we talk things through.”

Her eyes close and her chin falls to her chest. “I’m not ready.”
