Chapter 24

Understanding animals is easier than understanding humans.

Mav’s arm tightens around my waist as I inch toward the edge of the bed. “Where are you going?” He snuggles up to my back. “I had plans for this morning.”

I groan when he rolls his hips and his hard length hits my back. “I don’t have a choice.”

“Are you sure?” His hand dips under my t-shirt before skimming along my skin until he reaches my breast. His finger traces circles around my nipple, and I moan before arching into his hand. His other hand cups me.

“I guess I’m going to be late,” I gasp out.

“Excellent.” He re-arranges us until he’s looming over me. He grasps the edge of my t-shirt and I lift my arms. He whips the material off of me and ... my phone rings.

“Ignore it,” he orders when I reach for it.

“I can’t. The animals, my family. Something could be wrong.”

He snatches my phone off the bedside table and passes it to me before rolling off and stalking toward the attached bathroom. Unlike me, he slept completely naked, and I can’t help myself from watching his glorious backside as he leaves.

“Hello! Hello!” Lilac yells into the phone.

“I’m here.”

“No, you’re not.”

Mav shuts the door and I’m able to concentrate on the conversation. “What do you mean? I’m talking to you on the phone, aren’t I?”

She huffs. “I’m at your house and you aren’t here.”

“Why are—” I cut myself off and swear under my breath when I remember she was supposed to pick me up this morning.

“Go along to Ashlyn’s without me. I’m going to be late.”

“I’ll wait for you. I’m fifteen minutes early.”

Of course, she is. “I’ll be there in five,” I say and ring off.

I throw on the clothes Mav lent me yesterday. “I’ll see you later,” I shout toward the bathroom before dashing out of the room.

He catches me at the front door. “Use my bike,” he says before kissing my cheek. “When will you be home?”

Home? Does he mean his house or mine? “I don’t know.”

“Just let me know. I’m reading scripts all day, but I’m available if you need me.”

I stare at him. This is such a normal conversation about our everyday lives. We’ve never had one of those before. I’m not certain how to react.

Mav smirks as he pushes me out of the house. “You’re late, remember?”

With a whole lot of breakneck pedaling and the fastest shower in the history of womankind, Lilac and I manage to arrive at Ashlyn and Rowan’s house a mere ten minutes late.

I’m still catching my breath when Ashlyn bounces her way toward me. She taps her chin and studies me for a few moments before announcing, “Juniper got herself some last night.”

I’m not going to deny it. I can’t. I think I spotted a hickey Mav gave me on my neck while I was showering. So much for keeping a low profile.

“You’re one to talk. You’re practically glowing from the sex vibes emanating from you.”

“I assume she’s glowing due to the increased amounts of hormones being released in her body because of her pregnancy.”
