She shrugs. “Phoenix is the goat whisperer. Not me.” She grasps my hands.

“What are you doing?” I try to tug my hands away, but she holds tight.

“You don’t have to stay if you don’t want to.”

“Yes, I do. This is a family activity. I’m required to stay.”

“I promise I won’t let Mom make you take a singing class again.”

I cringe. The singing class was worse than the tango class.

“Thank you, but I should stay.”

“But I hate seeing you this way.”

This way? Do I not look okay? I glance down at the dress I’m wearing. It’s a simple sundress, but I think it fits my figure nicely.

She squeezes my hands. “The dress is lovely. I mean how sad you are.”

“I’m not sad. I’m happy to celebrate your engagement with you.”

“You’re lying again.” I have no response since she’s correct. I need to make a note of how heartbreak leads a person to compromising their values. “I hate this part of the process.”

“What process?”

“The mating process.”

I yank my hands from hers and cross my arms over my chest. “This is not part of the mating process. You’re mistaken. Beckett and I are over.” I demonstrated how there is no solution to our situation not five minutes ago.

She pats my shoulder. “Yeah. Uh-huh.”

I frown at her hand on my shoulder. “Why are you placating me?”

“Because if I tell you you’re wrong, you’ll begin a discussion on how you’re never wrong. Except, in this instance, you are wrong.”

“In this instance, I don’t think I would mind being proven wrong,” I mutter. This is a most unusual statement for me as I do hate to be wrong.

Tap. Tap. Tap. “Can I have everyone’s attention?”

What in the world is Beckett doing here, and why is he standing on the stage?

“Someone’s about to be proven wrong,” Juniper sings as she drags me to the stage.

Ashlyn, Aspen, and Ellery join us as do Beckett’s sisters.

“What’s going on?” I ask Gabrielle as I know Cassandra or Elizabeth won’t tell me.

She smiles. “You’ll see.”
