Chapter 34

Grand gesture – when a man makes an especially elaborate and showy action to win his girlfriend back

Beckett

Itap on the microphone to make sure it’s on. “Can I have everyone’s attention?”

My gaze is focused on Lilac, so I don’t miss how she jumps upon hearing my voice. I’m afraid she’s going to try and run away, but her sister drags her to a spot in front of the stage where she’s joined by her other sisters and mine.

She asks Gabrielle what’s happening, and I smile when my youngest sister refuses to answer. Of course, my sisters don’t know what I did any more than Lilac does.

“I have an announcement.”

“And? Are you going to keep up in suspense all day?” Ashlyn shouts at me.

Her husband, Rowan, kisses her hair before whispering something to her. She melts into him, and I try not to be jealous of their relationship. Soon, I promise myself. Soon, Lilac and I will be a loving couple again.

“I want to announce the appointment of the Chief Technical Officer at Clean Mountain Environment.”

“Why are you announcing a new appointment to the company at Juniper’s engagement party?” Lilac asks.

Her sisters giggle at her confusion.

“This is the equivalent of a nerd grand gesture,” Maverick says.

“We did tell him to do a grand gesture when the time is right,” Lyric points out, and Rowan and Cole nod in agreement.

The gossip gals elbow their way to the front. “Go ahead, Beckett.” Sage motions for me to continue.

“Why do the gossip gals know what’s happening?” Lilac asks.

Juniper pats her arm. “It’s part of the mating ritual.”

Lilac frowns at her. “You, of all people, should realize mating ritual refers to procreative behavior in animals.”

“This is procreative behavior. Courtship display falls under procreative behavior.”

“Beckett, please say what you have to say before these two nerds cause everyone in the audience to fall into a nerd-coma. I’m begging you.” Ashlyn puts her hands together as if in prayer and bats her eyelashes at me.

“Nerd-coma isn’t a thing,” Lilac tells her.

Ashlyn pretends to faint, and when Rowan catches her, she begins snoring.

“What’s going on? What did we miss?” Lilac’s Mom asks as she and her dad join the crowd.

Her hair is disheveled and her dad’s wearing a shit-eating grin.

“Where have you been?” Lilac asks despite the obvious answer.

Ashlyn feigns gagging. “No. I don’t want to know.”

Lilac lifts an eyebrow. “Told you nerd-coma wasn’t a real affliction.”

Aspen motions to the stage. “Beckett is trying to do a grand gesture.”

“A nerd grand gesture,” Lyric clarifies.

“But my sisters won’t shut up long enough for him to make his announcement,” Cassandra says.
