I dart a look at Mateo, still reclining in his chair, his head falling over the top of the plush headrest, eyes shut. Feet propped back up onto the desk, he seems relaxed, except for the tensing of his biceps, betraying his not fully cooled temper.

“As I was saying,” she continues, voice hesitant and shaky. “Osias is the … head of the light gods.” She chooses her words carefully, not wanting to upset Mateo again. Casting a furtive glance at him to gauge his reaction. He clenches his fists before releasing the movement, betraying no further emotion towards the statement. Gabris exhales a sigh of relief before continuing.

“His powers embody the light magic of the gods, meaning his powers can be manipulated to replicate any of the light powers.” Murmurs start around the class at these words, the students having more comprehensive knowledge of the true meaning of this than I do. The class grows silent as she begins to speak again.

“We will discuss more on the different light gods to give you a full appreciation of the scope of those powers. For today, we’ll continue on to the four other major light gods.

“Nyssa is the god of justice. She is known to be the gods’ peacekeeper and fights for the justice of gods and humans alike. Orrin is the god of wisdom. His knowledge comes from ancient powers, helping with logic and academics throughout the worlds. Phillipa is the god of love. This is all love, romantic, familial, friendship.

“Finally, there is Mateo, God of War.” She pauses, glancing at him cautiously before continuing. “He is the only one of the light majors whose power comes from both light and dark. War brings significant change, which can be harmful or beneficial depending on the victorious side.” The bell chimes as she opens her mouth to continue, cutting her off from the rest of her explanation.

“We will pick this up, next class. Have a great day, everyone.” She sighs in relief before moving to organize the papers on her desk. I remain seated, as does Mateo, and the students hurry to exit before us, wanting to get out of the tense classroom as fast as possible. Kali and Domenic pause at the door, looking back at me hesitantly. I wave them on, not wanting them to be late waiting for me. Mateo looks at me hesitantly, as though unsure what my reaction will be, the first slip I’ve seen in cocky demeanor.

“Please never come to my classes again,” I plead jokingly, sparing a glance to Professor Gabris before she silently slips out of the classroom.

“How about we compromise? I will come to your classes whenever I feel like it, but I promise to try not to throw any sharp objects.” He raises from his borrowed chair, moving to the board to collect his thrown dagger. Not even waiting for my response.

“Try?” My tone is incredulous, barking out a laugh at his idea of a compromise. I gather my books into my bag, meeting him over at the door, and he holds it open for me.

“Glad you agree,” he muses, cutting off all further discussion. I shake my head in disbelief as he waves and makes his way to the door, not giving me the chance to argue with him.

I make a mental note to buy him a dictionary, with the definition of compromise highlighted, with a big yellow sticky note sticking out of it already.

“My name is Olivia,” I blurt, unsure why exactly I’m now deciding to give in to the possessive brute. He pauses at my words, turning to flash me a brilliant smile. I pull in a sharp breath, the smile only makes him look more handsome. Before I know what’s happening he turns back and makes his way out of the classroom wing. Taking his win and thankfully not allowing the chance to ruin this moment.

I whip out my phone, checking my schedule before quickly making my way to the next classroom, hoping he won’t follow me to this one too.
