“Maximus said something earlier that I didn’t quite understand.” He tenses almost imperceptibly at the mention of the god of destruction. “He said the creature was a demon and mentioned something about the infernal realm. I’m not really sure what any of that means.” I place the mug down on the table beside me as he takes a seat next to me.

Kyros nods at my words, relaxing slightly on the couch. He looks at me thoughtfully, mulling over my question for a moment.

“You usually wouldn’t learn about this until later in your studies, but given today’s events, it’s best to give you as much information as possible.”

I nod at his words, my stomach knotting in anticipation. “Thank you, Kyros.” I reach across to clasp his hand. “I know I’ve only been in this realm for a few days, and I get that people are trying not to overwhelm me with too much information at once. Yet, I can’t help but feel lost, like everyone knows something that I don’t.” I surprise even myself at the vulnerability shining through my words. Not having actually spoken those feelings into existence before.

Kyros gives my hand a squeeze but avoids meeting my eyes, to my surprise. He inhales a shaky breath before his eyes finally raise to meet mine. Giving me a small, almost pained smile that doesn’t meet his gaze.

“The universe is broken into different realms. For example, our own, the ethereal realm, exists separate from the human one. There are many different realms, one of them being the infernal realm.”

I nod my head in understanding, now having a basic knowledge of the realms’ separation.

“The infernal realm is a world that exists separate from our own. Its closest relation would be what some humans understand Hell to be.” He pauses, allowing the words to sink in. I blink at him, not really surprised after seeing the chaos demon. Yet, the shock still registers through my system. Hearing there’s an actual realm where creatures like him roam, sends a shiver of fear down my spine.

“About a thousand years ago, Romulus, the head of the dark majors—” He pauses again, searching my face for understanding. I nod, the memories from Professor Gabris’ lesson sparking recognition.

“He overtook the infernal realm, killing its leadership and taking it for the dark gods.”

My brows furrow in confusion.

“He was never happy sharing leadership over the ethereal realm with Osias, so instead of starting a war between the gods, he chose to overtake the infernal realm. Claiming it for himself and his followers. Some dark-powered gods chose to stay in the ethereal realm, but not many. Most followed and fought to control the infernal realm with Romulus. To avoid retribution from their majors.”

His words sound pained, so I intertwine my fingers with his. His gaze travels to our hands at the movement, and I squeeze his in comfort.

The information flows from his lips, memories that he lived through, rather than facts read from a textbook. He lived through this time. Lost friends in the conflict.

“The gods are the only ones able to travel through the realms. This left the infernal realm rulers at their mercy, unable to escape Romulus’ attacks. Meanwhile, if it looked as though Romulus would lose, he and his armies would simply dissipate to another realm, waiting to attack when they least expected it. He slaughtered anyone who was able to stand against them. Leaving both the demon lords and lower demons, like the chaos demons, at the dark gods’ mercy.”

I swallow dryly. If the chaos demon was considered a lower demon, I really didn’t want to meet a demon lord in a dark alley.

I slide towards Kyros, my body craving the heat and comfort but stop a few inches short, not wanting to cross that boundary. I meet his gaze once more, and his eyes widen in surprise at my sudden movement. He swallows thickly, his Adam’s apple bobbing in his throat, faintly visible.

“So the demon didn’t get in by itself?” The answer is obvious, yet I need to confirm it. Need to make sure the swirling thoughts in my head are correct. He shakes his head, face sobering at my words.

He scrubs a hand over his face, sighing deeply. “A god must have summoned him here. Likely a dark god. Most light gods would never think to summon a beast like him.” He turns entirely towards me, our bodies so close now that his knee lightly brushes against mine. The soft fabric of his pants tickles my bare leg. My gaze fastened there.

“You need to stay vigilant. Please call me if anything like that ever happens. I can’t—I don’t want to see anything happen to you. Please, don’t put yourself at risk.” His voice comes out in a soft, pleading tone. My heart fractures with every word. I push aside the uneasy feeling turning in my gut, screaming at me to run from this man, those words, the emotion too raw, too real.

I look up at him through my lashes, still unsure of whether I should flee or climb on top of him. All thoughts of escape rush from my mind when his warm honey gaze meets mine. My heart melts inside my chest with just a look, breath catching in my throat as his eyes travel down to my mouth. I part my lips in anticipation, my body screaming at me to close the distance between us.

We both move forward at the same time, as though on instinct. Kyros’ lips gently brushing against mine in a light caress. My heart sings at the contact. Our movements are unhurried and he cradles the back of my head. Our bodies gravitate closer with each glide of our lips.

I move my mouth from his, hitching my leg over his lap and wind my arms around his neck. As though our minds are in sync, he doesn’t miss a beat, his other hand grasping my waist pulling me against his chest.

His lips find mine a moment later, his tongue skimming over the seam of my lips. My lips part under his sensual caress, and he wastes no time dipping in. His skillful tongue caresses mine, devouring me, eliciting a needy moan for me. He swallows the sound, his lips moving harder against mine, spurred on by my needy sounds. My body melts against his, our chests brushing against each other, my nipples pebbling at the contact.

I lower myself fully onto his lap, eliciting a moan from his lips at the contact. My skirt splays around me—All that separates us are his cotton pants and my sheer lace thong. His hand moves from my waist, smoothing over the curve of my ass over my skirt. He moves to my exposed thigh, feathering light touches across my bare skin. I roll my hips against him, feeling his hardening cock rub against me. He groans into my mouth, arching his hips up into mine, and my hands clasp tighter against his neck, crushing my mouth against his in an attempt to stifle my moan—pleasure courses through me from the friction.

A loud crackling comes from somewhere in the room, the noise close to the static from a television changed to the wrong channel. Our lips part in a rush and I glance around.

Kyros moves me from his lap at my distraction, the motion jostling me back onto the leather couch. He raises to his feet, keeping me behind him as he surveys the room.

He moves silently towards the door, opening it a crack to peer outside, and I hurriedly join him. Not wanting to be left behind, despite the chance of danger outside.

The students once crowding anxiously around the study tables now crouch beneath them. A shiver of fear moves up my spine. The scene is similar to the students cowering under their desks in the classroom.

My breath catches in my chest, eyes darting around the room, sure I’m about to find another chaos demon throwing students about. Instead, a blurry figure flickers in the middle of the library, the figure coming in and out of focus so quickly I can’t distinguish who or what it is.
