“What?” Shane asked.

“I’ve met one of the princesses of the underworld, demon hunter Erin Belmont. King Tanner is her brother. I could ask her to contact the king and ask if you could go there, if he could facilitate a meeting between you and your father.”

Shane’s eyes widened. “Is that possible?”

“I don’t know, but there’s only one way to find out.” She picked up her phone. “If it is, do you want to go? Should I arrange a meeting?”

Shane looked at me, his eyes still big. I could feel the tension radiating from his body. Meet with his father again, even if for a while. That was probably a shocking proposition.

He gulped. “Yes. Do that.”

Lavinia turned her back to us as she called the demon hunter, Killian hovering over her.

Once more, I ran my hand down Shane’s arms. “Are you okay?”

He let out a long breath. “I don’t know. Talk to my father again? I mean, I want to. He’s my father. His death was sudden and brutal. But at the same time … it feels rushed. As if I’m not ready for it.”

“You sure are ready for anything,” I assured him. “This might not work out, though. Lavinia had this idea, but we don’t know if it’s feasible. Don’t despair before the fact.”

“I know.” He grabbed my hands in his. “But despite my apprehension, I think this would be a good thing. I have a long list of things to ask him, starting with the crystals and how to activate the barrier.”

“And the creature.”

“That too. If he knows about it.”

“I hope he does.” Otherwise, we were doomed. If the previous alpha didn’t know, who would?

“Me too.” Shane reached for the to-go coffee cup inside the brown bag and took a sip. He made a face.

“It’s not hot anymore?”

He shook his head. “Nope.”

I took the cup from him. “There’s a microwave in the back.” And ceramic mugs. “I’ll heat it up for you.”

I turned and almost ran into Lavinia as she faced us again.

“I talked to Erin,” she said. “She confirmed Tanner can call on anyone in the underworld. She’ll arrange a meeting for tomorrow if you want.”

I gaped at her. “That was fast.”

“Fast, but necessary.” Shane nodded. “Tell her I want it.” He glanced at me. “And this time, I want you to come with me.”

I almost asked why, but it didn’t matter. My mate wanted me by his side while he met his dead father—a difficult situation for anyone, even for those with great relationships with their parents.

“Sure,” I told him.

SHANE

I was goingto meet my father.

That kept repeating in the back of my mind as I went on with my day. It was hard focusing on my usual activities—surveying the border, training the soldiers, fixing the town—when there was a huge crack in the pavement right in the middle of the pack lands, and soon I would see my father.

As the townspeople woke up and went about their day, rumors spread. I swiftly cut them back and assured everyone the problem with the crystals would be solved soon. As per my request, only a few knew where I would be going tomorrow—and most of those didn’t even know Raika was coming with me.

Of course, everyone was curious about the crack and the creature inside—I couldn’t cull that rumor fast enough. Again, I assured everyone that we didn’t know what was down there, if there was anything at all. We all felt an earthquake and that might be the sole cause for the crack.
