Even though earthquakes were rare around here.

In the evening, I talked to Dom, Vallin, and Killian about my absence and their duties. They knew what to do, but I couldn’t help it.

Before I retreated to my house, Killian asked if I was sure I didn’t want him and Lavinia to come with us.

“I would feel better knowing you’re here, caring for my people,” I told him. It was the truth.

But I also couldn’t wait to spend time alone with Raika, even if it was inside the car while we drove to the nearest underworld entrance.

At my house, I baked the lasagna Raika had left in the fridge for us, and Tyren, Minsi, and I ate as a family, even if we barely talked. Tyren wasn’t the talkative type, and Minsi had barely spoken a word since I'd come back.

I wished Raika was here. She would have known what to do. I had texted her, invited her for dinner, but she was busy at the library, cataloging materials that had arrived that afternoon. She wanted to make sure everything was set before leaving for two days.

Early the next morning, I woke up, took a shower, ate breakfast, and opened the door for Rue when she came.

“Thanks for doing this,” I told her as she walked in.

“Don’t mention it.” She patted my arm. “I like staying with them.”

I knew they liked staying with her too, and that put me at ease.

When Tyren and Minsi came downstairs, I said goodbye to them, picked up my bag, and went to the garage on the side of the house, where my father’s pickup truck was. I threw my bag in the backseat and opened the driver’s door as Raika appeared at the garage’s entrance.

“I heard there’s a place for me in that truck,” she said with a small smile.

Holy moon, she was so pretty. Today she wore black leather leggings, a black corset top, and high-heeled boots. Her long, wavy hair was loose behind her back, as usual, and her blue eyes shone bright. Her lips were pinker than usual and an urge to erase her lipstick hit me hard.

“It depends.” I stalked to her. “What do I get with that?” She raised one eyebrow. Moon, I couldn’t resist her. I grabbed her waist, pulled her against me, pressed her against the truck’s side, and kissed her.

The bag she had been holding fell to the ground, and she wrapped her hands around my upper arms.

I ravaged her mouth before dragging my lips down her neck. She gasped when I bit down on her skin. “If you plan on leaving this garage today, I suggest you stop this,” she said, breathless. “Besides, isn’t everyone in the house? They probably can hear us.”

I growled but pulled back slightly. “I want everyone to hear us.” I leaned into her and whispered in her ear, “I want them to know you’re mine. Just mine.”

She sucked in a sharp breath.

By the moon …

I took a large step back before I ripped off her clothes and had her right there. As much as I would love to do nothing else but sleep with her, we had plenty of urgent matters.

With a sigh, I picked up her bag and threw it beside mine.

Raika rounded the truck and hopped in the passenger seat. I sat behind the wheel, turned the engine on, put on my seat belt, and glanced at her.

“Ready?”

She extended her hand to me. I took it. “Now I am.”

Smiling, I drove us out of the garage, out of the pack lands, toward the underworld.

The nearest underworldentrance was nine hours away, near Winnipeg. I had talked to Tanner on the phone yesterday afternoon, after he confirmed our meeting with Erin, and he told me what to expect.

Raika and I had to stop for gas and lunch once, but other than that, we drove nonstop.

As instructed, I drove out of town and onto a private road leading to a farmhouse. From the outside, the farm seemed to be functional and cared for, but once we crossed the second metal gate before the farmhouse, the glamour fell.
