The murmurs increased to a full chatter, filled with terror.

“Just leave? We can’t leave!”

“I won’t leave my house!”

“I can’t pack that fast!”

“Why not wait until tomorrow?”

Shane growled. “We can’t wait until tomorrow, because it has been a little over two hours since the crystals were destroyed, and five more wolves are now sick. If we wait until tomorrow, how many more will get sick? Ten? Twenty? We can’t risk it.” The voices increased and Shane raised his hands. “All right, I’ll say it again. Go back to your houses, pack what you can, and in two hours, we leave. Do it, or I’ll use the alpha’s command.”

That seemed to shake everyone awake. The crowd started dispersing.

Serge hopped onto another bench and yelled, “I also have an announcement.”

I stared at him. What was this crazy wolf doing?

“Serge, you’re banished!” Shane snarled. “You shouldn’t be here!”

“Oh, I know I was banished.” The two scratches on his face looked ugly and raw even from here. “But I thought the pack should hear something important before I leave for good.”

“There’s nothing for you to say!”

“But there is.” A wolfish grin took over his face. “You’re all wondering why all of this is happening to us? Why our previous alpha was killed? Why we were enslaved by a half-wolf, half-demon? Why our current alpha is cursed? Why the land is dying? Why wolves are getting sick? I know the answer.”

Now he had everyone’s attention. Even mine.

“Serge, shut up!” Shane shouted. “You’re banished! Leave or I’ll make you leave.”

The crowd spoke louder.

“We want to hear him!”

“Let him speak!”

“Wait! I want to hear his piece!”

Shane growled. I was sure he wouldn’t hear the people, but Serge was faster. He pointed his finger at me. “It’s because our alpha is mated to the omega!”

All faces turned to me. I sucked in a sharp breath. A new wave of murmurs started.

“He’s mated to her?”

“She helped us, but I don’t want her as the alpha’s mate.”

“The alpha likes her? Ew.”

“But she’s the omega!”

“She doesn’t deserve this.”

“She doesn’t deserve him.”

Tyren stepped in front of me, as if he could protect me from the harsh words.

Shane glared at Serge before turning to the crowd. “It’s true Raika and I are mated,” he said over the crowd. “But that’s not the reason for the problems we’re having.”

Serge scoffed. “I can prove it is.” He looked at me. “She’s a whore, who was in league with—”
