“Watch it!” Shane advanced on Serge, but Dom and Vallin held him back.

“—Conri. She’s the one poisoning our land and our friends.”

“What?” I asked, my voice faint.

“You know how? She’s a half-wolf, half-demon like Conri!”

My throat went dry, the blood rushed to my ears. How … how did he know this? Had he seen the shadows around my arms that day? No, he couldn’t have. He had been down, covered in books.

Shane got rid of Dom and Vallin, but Serge had come prepared. His friends stood in his way, pushing Shane back.

“But, dear wolves, let’s not despair,” Serge continued. “I have a solution for this.”

“Banish her!” someone yelled.

“Kill her!” another one added.

Now Roman held my wrist and pulled me several feet back. He was getting ready to run with me, but I yanked my hand from his grip. I wasn’t going to run from this. This was ridiculous and the pack would soon see that.

Suddenly, Lavinia, Killian, Evelyn, and Ash stood beside me too.

“No need to kill her,” Serge said. “Not yet.” He laughed. “But we all agree our alpha isn’t the right one for us. He left us. He stayed away for an entire year, not caring for us—“

“That’s a lie!” Shane yelled, lost somewhere in the crowd. I could barely see the top of his head as he wrestled with Serge’s friends.

I held on to Killian’s arm and said, “Make Shane stop. Don’t hurt Serge. He was already banished, fighting will make it worse. We have to solve this in a civil way, or people will think Shane’s unhinged, and that won’t help our cause.”

Killian disappeared from my side. Three seconds later, I could see him pushing Shane back, talking to him. Shane fought him for a moment, then stopped. But the tension in his shoulders, in his expression, didn’t ease.

“Our alpha is cursed,” Serge continued. “In a handful of days, the full moon will be back and we’ll have to lock him up so he doesn’t kill us. What kind of alpha is that?” A roar of agreement came from the crowd. Oh, by the moon. “Moreover, he lost our crystals, and he’s abandoning our land, without even fighting for it.”

“That’s not true!” Shane yelled once more. At least he had stopped advancing on Serge.

Slowly, Shane made his way toward me. As he weaved through the crowd, people glared at him, pushed him, cursed at him. But he ignored them all, his eyes set on mine.

He reached me, grabbed my hand, and pulled me to his side. Our friends surrounded us.

“Shane isn’t fit to be our alpha!” Serge shouted. “Because of that, I invited someone who is.” He gestured to one of the side roads.

What?

Slowly, we turned around. I gasped and gripped Shane’s hand tighter.

Wolves with white spots on their fur surrounded us. I tried counting fast, but in front of us, I saw twenty. They closed a circle around the square, around all of us. There had to be at least a hundred here. That was twice our number.

If I took into consideration that we might have lost at least half of our pack to Serge and his speech, then it was even less than that.

A man walked forward from behind the wolves. Long blond hair, fair skin, and light blue eyes—the most common traits of the Whitecrest wolves. Unlike others here who wore normal or combat clothes, he had come in a light gray suit with a baby blue tie.

“Nortrix,” Shane said with a growl.

Nortrix flashed Shane a triumphant smile. “Hi again. I told you we weren’t done.”

Growling, Shane took a step forward. I grabbed his arm with both hands and Killian extended his arm in front of Shane’s chest, like a metal bar, blocking his way.

“What are you doing here?” Shane asked.

Nortrix took three steps forward, but kept a safe distance from us. “I could just come here and take over, kill you right here, right now, but I’m not that cruel. I want to give you a chance.”
