But then he stopped a few feet from me and took a deep breath, his expression neutral. “You didn’t reply to my text. I was worried there was something wrong.”

“Sorry. Lucille found me.” I gestured toward where she went. “I was about to reply now.”

Dom crossed his arms. “I’m here now. Just tell me.”

I groaned. I really didn’t want to do this face-to-face. I didn’t want to have to explain myself or argue with my friends. They didn’t feel the pain I did. But Lucille was right. They were all in agony and miserable, just as I was. It wasn’t fair of me to think I was the only one suffering here.

“Drake got word that Paimon is plotting to take the underworld back,” I told Dom.

His eyes widened. “But that would mean a war.”

I nodded. “Precisely. However, I won’t let that happen.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’m leaving. Right now. I’m going after him. I’ll kill him myself.”

Dom stared at me. “You do realize he is more than a higher demon? He’s a former prince. His power is unheard of, and with all due respect, I don’t think you’re up to par to take him down.”

I sighed. “Maybe not me, but my Shadow Wolf. I’ll let him out and he might be what we need to take him down.” If not that, then I could at least do some good damage, until the demon hunters came and helped me finish the job.

“The full moon was a few days ago. If you let the Shadow Wolf out now, it’ll be harder to control him.”

I scoffed. “I can’t control him. Once he takes over, my consciousness is gone.”

“Isn’t he taking more and more of you?” Dom’s voice rose. He was upset with me. ”Do you want to risk letting him out now and losing yourself to him?”

“If I’m not near my pack, I’m not afraid. Just promise one thing, if I do lose it, you’ll find me and you’ll kill me before I kill innocent people.” Dom closed his eyes for a moment and cursed under his breath. “Dom, please.”

He cursed some more. “Fine. I promise.” He extended his hand to me. I clasped his forearm in a tight grip. “Don’t make me do it, though. Don’t lose to the Shadow Wolf. And come back to us.”

I nodded. “Keep everyone safe while I’m gone.”

“I’ll do my best.”

I let go of his arm and stepped inside my house. I grabbed my duffel bag from my bed, slung it over my shoulder, and went back out. Thankfully, Dom didn’t wait for another awkward goodbye and I was able to run to DuMoir Castle without anyone bothering me.

I found Prince Gray in front of the castle. He and ten vampires checked their bags and supplies.

A frown curved his lips when he saw me coming.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

“Where do you think?”

“That’s not what Lord Drake ordered.”

I stood a foot from him and gave him my best I-don’t-fucking-care glare. “I’m going with or without your help. So why don’t you make this easy for the both of us and let me hitch a ride?”

Gray stared at me, clearly not pleased. “Fine. Come along. But I'm reporting this to Drake.”

I shrugged. “Do whatever you have to.”

We didn’t driveto Winnipeg. That was a twenty-five-hour trip, and even though vampires slept a lot less than most species, we would need to take too many breaks, making the trip even longer.

Instead, a portal opened and a warlock walked out from it. Aspen worked directly with Keeran, who was good friends with Lord Drake. Keeran was Almae’s son and Lavinia’s cousin.
