Kaz’s eyes met mine through the rearview mirror and he gave me a curt nod.

We stopped around noon to eat, then we kept going. A couple of times we moved from northeast to northwest, then north. The dragon kept moving, but Kaz told us that he felt we were getting closer.

“It won’t be as easy or as fast as you believe,” he said.

No kidding.

Around six in the evening, we stopped for gas and dinner. While Kaz filled up the tank, the rest of us went into the convenience store to buy some burgers.

“Should we get a burger for Kaz?” Ivy asked.

I stared at her.

Roman didn’t seem to notice it. “Who doesn’t like burgers? Order one for him. If he doesn’t like it, he can buy whatever he wants.”

Roman grabbed some chocolate bars from the shelves and went to the fridges in the back, and Ivy ordered four burgers from the server behind the counter.

I kept staring at her.

“What?” she snapped.

“What is going on?” I asked. She shook her head, as if telling me she had no idea what I was talking about. “Kaz. You’ve been talking about him since he first showed up. Are you …?” I lowered my voice. “Are you into him?”

“What? No!” Then a small smile graced her lips. “Well, not really, but he’s hot, and this brooding mood of his is getting to me.”

I put a hand over my open mouth. “Holy shit, you like him!”

“Wait up a minute! No, I don’t. I barely know the guy.” She leaned into me and whispered, “But if he wanted to meet me in the bed of that truck and have his way with me, I wouldn’t stop him.”

I slapped her arm and laughed. “You’re so into him.”

She shrugged. “Can’t a girl just want sex because the guy is hot? No feelings involved?”

I chuckled. “Of course she can.” And I truly believed that.

My eyes wandered to Roman, who reached inside one of the fridges and grabbed some sodas.

“What about you?”

I snapped my gaze back to her. “W-what?”

Ivy leaned on the counter while we waited for the burgers. “You haven’t remembered anything about him?” She jutted her chin in Roman’s direction. “What do you feel when you look at him? Horny?”

My cheeks flamed. “No.” I sneaked a quick peek at him. He had a basketful of chocolate, chips, soda, and water. “I mean … he’s hot.”

But that was it. I didn’t feel like I wanted to rush to him and rip his clothes off. Like I needed him to look at me, to touch me all the time. I wondered … I was twenty years old, he was a little older, and we had been together for a long time. We probably had sex before, didn’t we? I wanted to remember how it was, how it felt … how everything about him with me had been.

Having a mate for life and not remembering one bit of our past together sucked big time.

“And?” Ivy prompted.

I shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“Pretend you don’t know him. Pretend we’re having a girls’ night out and you see this hottie and he wants to take you back to his place. Wouldn’t you go with him?”

I … I wasn’t so sure I would. I didn’t know why. He was my mate, wasn’t he? Should I feel the attraction, the pull toward him even without knowing who he was? Once more I wondered if having my memories damaged had also damaged the bond. Maybe I should ask Dot.

I sighed. “I’ll take a raincheck. We should talk about this when I have my memories back.”
