She scoffed. “You’re no fun.”

The lady behind the counter came back with a bag and our burgers, and we met Roman at the cashier to pay for our stuff. Ivy handled the money part, while I stared at the truck parked beside the pump and Kaz leaning on the side of the truck. His arms crossed.

A silver sedan stopped right behind the truck and a young couple hopped out. The girl pointed to Kaz and asked him something. He shook his head, said something back, and looked at us.

The girl followed his gaze.

“Shit.” Roman jumped in front of me and lowered his head, his back to the front of the store.

I looked at him, at his strange behavior. “What happened?”

Roman grabbed my hand and pulled toward the back. “Ivy, take care of this.”

Ivy cursed under her breath. “Just go.” She pushed us behind her.

“What's going on?” I asked, confused and anxious. Holding tight to my hand, Roman guided us to the back of the convenience store. We entered an employee-only area and he didn’t stop. In the middle of what looked like a storage room, I halted and tugged hard on his hand. “Roman, what’s going on?”

He turned to me, his eyes wild. “Those two … they are from our pack. They're here to kill you.”

My knees weakened. “W-what?”

He held tighter to my hand. “Now do what I tell you, so we can get out of here safely. Understood?”

I nodded, though I felt like I couldn’t move.

A boom came from the front of the store and the walls shook.

Roman rushed through the storage room, and we stopped again before another door. He opened it a little and spied out. He put a finger over his mouth and I nodded again. Slowly, we walked out, at the back of the gas station, and kept low around a white van.

Another boom sounded, louder now that we were outside, and I covered my ears. Was it always like this? The fights, the chases, the missions? Running, loud sounds, the heart pumping so fast it felt like it would burst from the chest?

Maybe I wasn’t cut out for this, not without my memories, not without knowing how to fight and how to use my darkfire properly.

If I was here and chickening out, it was my own damn fault! I had been the one who insisted on coming. I wanted to be a part of this. Now I was here. And I wouldn’t chicken out.

I closed my eyes and inhaled deeply. A scream, a grunt, and the sound of metal scraping against concrete came from the other side of the building. My insides knotted again, but I told myself I couldn’t do this. I couldn’t allow fear and apprehension to win.

I exhaled and shook my shoulders, trying to calm down.Couldone calm down in a situation like this?

The sound of screeching wheels rounded the corner and the truck appeared right beside us.

“Get in!” Ivy yelled, half her body hanging from the passenger’s window and darkfire dancing in her hands.

Roman jumped to his feet and pulled me with him. We ran to the truck and hopped in the backseat. The door wasn’t even closed yet when Kaz sped off and away.

I looked back at the couple standing in the middle of a half-destroyed gas station. Why was the man holding a sword? Wasn’t he a wolf shifter too?

I frowned. They probably couldn’t see me now, but I could see them, and they looked around my age. We could have been friends, but Roman told me I didn’t have any friends. It was just him.

When the two of them became little specks in the distance, I turned and sank into the seat.

Kaz glanced at the rearview mirror, his brows knotted.

“What happened back there?” Ivy asked. “Who were those two?”

Roman grunted. “They are from our old pack. I think they were here to kill Raika.” Kaz snorted. Roman frowned. “What?”

“They weren’t wolf shifters,” he said, his tone flat.
