Escape.

I zoomed past the trees and bushes and thorns. I could hear the fighting behind me, and I wanted to turn back and kill.

No, escape!

Several times, I hesitated. My steps faltered.

Kill.

But I kept moving forward. To where? I didn’t know. It didn’t matter. I just had to go.

Go back.

Destroy.

Kill.

I stopped in a small clearing and let out a painful howl.

“Shane.”

I turned in the voice’s direction. The two females and one male I had seen fighting the demons stepped into the clearing. They had their hands up and kept their distance.

Kill.

I snarled at them.

They shouldn’t be here. They shouldn’t have come. My mouth salivated with the need to jump on them, to close my mouth around their necks—

Kill!

I rushed them.

Three steps in and a bright light flashed before my eyes. I blinked and turned away from the light, but then it was everywhere. The light surrounded me like a bubble. I howled in pain, in agony.

“Shane, come back,” someone said beyond the light. “We need you.”

I blinked, but the light only grew stronger. It pushed beyond my fur, against my skin, until it was in my nostrils, in my pores. I screamed.

I lay on the cold grass, curling into myself.

“Shane,” the voice came again.

But this time, when I looked, I recognized the woman kneeling beside me. “Ariella.”

She nodded. “Welcome back.”

Thierry and Doreen stepped closer, and Thierry threw me a jacket.

“Thanks.” I slipped it around my arms and zipped it up. It was tight on my shoulders and went down to my mid-thigh. I felt ridiculous in it, but it would serve for now. I looked up at my companions. “Not just for the jacket.” Ariella stood up. “They didn’t get you?”

She shook her head. “They tried, but they wanted you. I decided to pull back so we could rescue you.”

Doreen put her hand on her waist. “Pretty bold of you to escape Paimon’s house by yourself. Didn’t you think we were coming to get you?”

“I hoped you three were smarter than to risk your neck for me.”

Thierry shook his head. “When we work together, we work together, no questions asked.”
